"She speaks English, Slovenian, and Chinese food"

Here we are sitting in prison, writing to everyone.. so lis and i researched and found one of the top 5 hostels in the world to be right here in slovenia..a prison hostel nonetheless. it was once a military prison that has now been converted into a artsy hostel. good idea..in theory... lets back up. last time we wrote, we had just arrived in salzburg. we got up the next morning at headed to town, walking around the cute streets where mozart and julie andrews once walked (both equally importan...

Fall Vacation, Part 2 - Ljubljana and the Karst

Hi everybody! Continuing our trip from Salzburg we were finally on our way to Slovenia. We arrived in Slovenia's capital, Ljubljana, on Monday afternoon and were met the following day by our friends Tom and Meeghan (you may remember them from the Belgian Beer weekend). It was a beautiful day so we wandered around Ljubljana, toured the house of the local architect, Joze Plecnik, hiked up to the castle and it's tower, had dinner at the same great pizza joint as we had eaten at the night before ...

Ljubljana (or: Our Night In A Slovenian Prison)

We took a train on Monday morning from Vienna to Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. The train itself was not as nice as the one in Prague and it was way more expensive, but you couldn't beat the scenery. We passed through picture-perfect meadows with cows grazing, castles on hillside tops, quaint little towns with names we would never be able to pronounce. When we arrived at Ljubljana it was a beautiful, sunny day. It seems like we need to be on a train in order to get sunshine. All the stre...

Ljubljana Celica is a great hostel. Relatively clean, great cheap food, friendly atmosphere. http://www.souhostel.com/en/index.html#

Adventures with Phil: Part 1

Ljubljana was nearly the first city I've stayed in for multiple nights without having seen during daylight hours. The hostel "Cellitsa" which we stayed in came billed as 'the place to be' and every single backpacker in Ljubljana stayed there. The proof came in the twilight as we got off the bus back from Lake Bled. The random collection of riders turned out to be not random at all, and instead of dispersing away from the bus station, a mass of strangers all walked back to this hostel together...

Days 21-24

Day 21 Another great night sleep in Zagreb and I lost the early train to Ljubljana. As it was a relatively short trip (less than 2 hours) it wouldn't be a problem to get the next train instead, around 1:00 pm. After some waiting (the train was more than 1 hour late) and some trouble figuring out which platform to go (they had changed the platform but announced that only in Croatian - the sign on the platform was not working) I was finally on the train to Ljubljana at 2:00 pm. I was sharing my...

Opatija to Ljubljana

It was time to say goodbye to our Christmas home and move on to see in the New Year in Ljubljana, Slovenia. There was no hurry for us to vacate our apartment - Kristijan has allowed us until 11 to leave, which gave us time to get ready then go to the nearby café for a morning coffee before getting on to the bus to Rijeka to meet the train that would take us to Ljubljana. It was an interesting experience to lug 6 bags onto a normal city bus, especially when it was full of people, but we manage...

Ljubljana Castle

The Castle at Ljubljana floats over the city like a watchful guardian. From every angle around the old town it is visible. Today it was visible through swirling mists, seeming mysterious and inviting. Today we would investigate it further. First though we took another look around the markets and decided we needed some sustenance, and hey, wouldn't it be fun to try some food from the stalls selling local delicacies. We ordered four of the things that looked a bit like hamburgers and a dish of ...

New Year's Eve

One of the reasons I had chosen Hostel Celica was that we would be in a more interesting location for Cameron and Jean on New Year's Eve. Sure enough, the hostel was having a NYE party with cheap drinks, all invited. Jess and I planned to go to the Preseren Square where there was a concert on and fireworks would be set off from the castle above the town. All of us went out looking for somewhere for dinner at around 7pm and tried a couple of places just by walking up to them. Of course it was ...
