Sarah: Mexico City - Lucha libre, Aztecs, Frida ..

Mexico City was AMAZING! we´re so glad we went there. we didn´t have any problems at all. There are 25 million people in the city zone, but actually another 10 million outside the city zone but still part of the city, cos it has spread so much. That makes it the biggest city in the world. The government has had to build a wall around the outside to stop the shantytowns growing even more and continuing to encroach on the surrounding forest. Despite the poverty and hard life of the city, it is ...

DF in 30 hours

9:00AM, Thursday Oct. 30

We've been up since 3AM- getting to MSY, flying to Houston (1 hr) then on to DF (1.5 hrs). It's around 9AM when we straggle through customs, which surprisingly only took a whopping 2 minute wait and then getting the green light through clearance (first time ever). My eyes are so red that I might be able to cut through walls if I stare at something hard enough, but we're here, and the city is warm and sunny and I know there is a torta with my name on it very, v...

La Vida de D.F.

Diary Extract This hostel room could be anywhere in the world until I step outside. Twenty-two hours and nothing to show except bleary eyes and a view to the Catedral Metropolitane. After almost a cumulative day inside a plane, my body is on lockdown. I'm past the stage of sleep ... D.F. is a dirty city and except for the Zocalo which lies right out my front door, I honestly don't think too much of it. It reminds me of Bangkok with the main exception being the fact that it's twice as big (at ...

Mexico City

We were lucky enough to have a hostel right on the Zocola (city square). Upon arrival we walked to the LatinoAmerica building - the highest in Mexico and went to the top to checkout the view of the city. For dinner we decided to go to Garibaldi Square as this is where they have mariachi's (typical Mexican men playing guitar in mexican dress), which was interesting. Matt also discovered Michelada's here, beer with lime juice and chilli salt around the cup. We caught the Metro to the suburbs of...

Mexico City

Made it to the first destination in one piece - quite impresseed with myself really - although it wasn´t without incident! Starting in Winchester with the bus driver asking 'do you know an alternative route out, the M3 is snarled´. No need to worry i thought... The flight proceeded without incident, customs delayed me 2 hrs but Kathryn was still waiting patiently. Feeling brave we decided to take the Metro to the hostel, why go for a taxi when the metro is only 10p? Well Metro is good, but no...

Hostage situation

We are a little dubious about Mexican efficiency. Yesterday the hostel had lost our booking - however taking 4 people half an hour at 11.30 at night they managed to find us space (plenty of space we had a 6 be room to ourselves). We got up to enjoy our first day in Mexican city, take in the historic sites, enjoy plenty of coffee foods and Cervezas (beers) only to find when we got back we had been locked out of our hostel room. We got are key reactivated and found our towels and toothbrushes h...

Stage 1 - Mexico

My travels start in mexico city, the 5th largest city in the world I think. I depart the plane feeling very nervous, never been on my own before and only been on a plane for the first time 6 years ago... but also excited and proud having made it and throwing myself into challenging myself. I leave the airport and try my first bit of spanish to get my taxi which seems to go ok and get to my hostel. Within minutes a girl says hello and join her and mates for a drink on the roof, wicked!.. now i...
