A Quick Family Reunion and Some R&R

My son Michael and his family were vacationing in Costa Rica while I was in the Galapagos Islands. They were flying out on the 7th of June so I decided to make a quick trip to see them. We stayed at the Holiday In Express which is right by the airport - easy for their 7:30 a.m. flight home.

It was great to see everyone and the boys, Parker, Taylor and Josh, were full of stories about all the animals they saw: sloths, monkeys, macaws and crocodiles. They also went deep sea fishing an...

Rubber Meet Tarmac

Despite the best warnings of the parinoid reteriee from Veagas next to me on the plane, I sucessfully took the bus from the airport to the city center and then walked the rest of the way to the hostel, making it safely all the way there.

People Watching and Wandering Downtown

I wandered through center city San Jose with Tony from Canada and William from The Netherlands. We checked out the market, sat in a public square to watch the city go by and found the bus station so I might find it tommorow on the way to my next destination, of Santa Teresa, tommorow.

End in sight

Its a chilly morning in San Jose. The rainy season makes the weather a little crazy to me. I think it has rained about 90 % of the days I've been here. Right now, I'm a little tired and a little the worse for wear. They held a graduation party for us at my school, Maximo Nivel, but halfway through the party I took off because I was about to fall asleep on the floor. I haven't been sleeping enough for just about this whole month between busting my ass at school so I could do some other activit...

Arrive at Hostel Bekuo

After two nights downtown, we were both ready to spread our wings and leave Segundo Avenue. We thumbed through Lonely Planet and basically let their suggestions guide us. Hostel Bekuo was one of the top affordable suggestions, and again, we couldn't be happier. Off the beaten path in a beautiful neighborhood lies Hostel Bekuo - www.hostelbekuo.com. We were greeted by Hieme, a twenty something Colombian studying Business Management. He showed us around the commons, and finally to our room with...

San Jose, Costa Rica

The trip down to San Jose was pretty uneventful. Arrived in the middle of the afternoon and the pickup from Interbus went well. Friendly driver, not much english spoken, but really friendly. San Jose feels like latin america. Not sure why, but it has something of the same feeling that parts of Rio had. Apparently its is quite a dangerous city - everywhere there are iron bars and barbed wire or razor wire protecting the houses, the shops, everything. Signs on the gate on the way out saying not...

Back in San Jose

After a rather trying day in Quito, we had a fairly uneventful flight back up to San Jose in Costa Rica. All our flights go through here, so we'll be back again to pick up our flight to Miami in a couple of weeks. We've left most of our luggage at the hostel and tomorrow morning we'll be up bright and early to head up into Nicaragua for 9 days or so...

So long Latin America

Trip down from Nicaragua today went without a hitch. Definitely recommend Tica Bus in this part of the world if you want a smooth, easy bus trip. Everything is packed and we're heading out for dinner shortly. Have to be at the airport at 4 tomorrow morning - blergh! - so it'll be an early night tonight. Tomorrow we fly to Miami for our last 4 nights of freedom...

Don't Carry Anything You Aren't Prepared to Lose

... the waiting area. We waited together. They were actors (who still have their day jobs) from New York City and visited Arenal up close. We learned enough from our conversation to want to return. The woman was small but when it came time to board the bus, she and Neal (along with everyone else) pushed their way on board and found some good seats. Her husband and I eventually fought our way on board. Neal and I were seated behind them. Since Neal was ...

Hola! from Costa Rica!

Hola all! Well i have been in Costa Rica for tres dias now and have lots to tell you but thought I'd add some more crazy things that happened in the states that i have just remembered to my previous list, 1 After a horrible flight from Hawaii to LA and over an hour trying to sort our rent-a-car out (yes its OK it was still a mustang convertible, but no, no cherry red) and driving for an hour on LA freeways in like i don't know maybe 30 ...
