I'm on a boat...

So, when I left off we had arrived in Roma. The eternal city in the bel paese. One of my favorite cities in all the world. And the rest of my group hated it.

I can't say I especially blamed them, based on their first impressions. Our train was, give or take 10 minutes, on time but the train station, Termini, was insanely crowded. Too little space for all those people. It was nearly dark, and our first hostel was close to the train station. Usually this is a good thing, because it mean...

i love rome!!

hello to all... sorry its been a while, but its hard to find the time to get online. first of all i want to advise that no one ever visit naples :) i hated it. it was nasty, graffiti filled, and the drivers are CRAZY. and we thought athens drivers are bad!! pompeii was amazing. we walked through hours of ruins and still didnt see it all. vesuvuis loomed over the city. the plaster casts brought a sad reminder of what happen thousands of years ago. i am in love with rome, though. the colosseum ...

Earthquake? What earthquake?

We woke up a little off after last night's misadventures, hoping just to catch the first train out of Vernazza. As it turned out we just missed it (figures) but this time it was to our advantage. Since we had an hour and a half to kill in town we figured we should make the best of it and looked around. The village of Vernazza is built into the side of a hill...or more to the point carved out of the side of a hill. The "beach" is a very small harbor just outside our door, and we walked around ...

When in Rome...Wow!

We got an early start on the day 'cause dad had a list of things to do. We parked right around the corner from the place we were staying and only had to pay 4 Euros to park for the day...a good deal since we weren't about to drive anywhere. After we took a couple of things out of the car we walked across the street to try to get something to eat but the place was too full, so we just decided to head to the Metro station. Along the way we found a nice little sidewalk cafe and ordered something...

Rome, Italy

Day 20 The first hostel was near the train station and we had only booked it for one night. So first thing that day we had to move out and go to our next hostel which was located a block from the Vatican City. We got settled in and then took the subway to the Colosseum. We purchased 3 day Roma Passes so we got free metro travel and entry to certain museums included in the price. The Colosseum was quite amazing to see. It was built in just 8 years and could seat 70,000 people. Allowing the low...

Venice to Rome

... caught my train. I got a window
seat and was able to view Italy's great landscape. The trains in Italy
all require reservations which cost 10 euro however they are much more
roomy and comfortable. They also had a power plug so I could charge my
ipod. The train stopped at Bologna, Florence and then Rome. I got in
around 4pm and headed straight for the hostel. The hostel was only a
five minute ...

When in Rome...

... s just a pale ghost of a reminder of the glory that was once Rome. Even still, they're incredibly interesting to see and to imagine what must have been, over 1500 years ago. I climbed up Palatine Hill and got some great views looking down into the ruins of the Forum and the Circus Maximus. I then wandered through the ruins of the Forum, seeing bricks that had been laid there probably over 2000 years ago. I wondered if 2000 years from now, tourists might ...

Rome and Vatican City

... century BC stucture. We walked all the way down to the 1st-century remains (2nd-century BC layer is to be excavated). The alleyways deep down and below are dark, claustrophobic and a bit scary. I was certain that I would be scared to death if I were accidently locked inside there. So for me, staying close to Chris and other people was almost more important than studying the ancient ancient sights :) After a day of walking in intense heat, we enjoyed a very ...

... Piazza di Pietra, Galleria Sordi, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Venezia, an then Piazza Sonnino. It took about 4 hours in the sun, walking in about 80 degree weather, 50 % humidity (it is so hot...) and then came back to JCU for lunch. I am now typing to my imaginary audience/journal of my trip to Rome. On the way home, we are stopping at a department store to get things that we keep thinking we need for our apartment. Then, siesta and rest until dinner and a crazy ...

... has been spent on restoring the villas gardens. We will now return next week. At the Parco di Pinochio, we filmed a video for Luke. The long suppressed "ham" emerged in Ches, but she requires a much stronger director than I. Unfortunately ,toward the end there is a maze, and with Ches's reputation as a navigator, and her innate sense of direction, she insisted on leading us through. We did emerge. We also happened upon a puppet show ...
