Well we've been to Athens and returned within a day. We took the overnight bus from the Pink Palace and arrived by 7 am the next day. After throwing our bags in a barren room at Hostel Aphrodite, we walked the streets. Smelly, dirty, garbage-ridden, streets to the elusive Acropolis. At first it seemed impossible to find the tallest, most prominent structure in all of Athens. Not a single mark on a map or anything. We were rather confused, but using some ingenuity we eventually found the massi...
Athens, Greece chris.daveyArrived in Greece around 4pm, because it was after 4, a lot of the sites were closed, so I walked around the hostel area and took in my new surroundings for the next few days. Got back to the hostel and lucked out because they didn't have a bed to offer me in the dorms, so I was given a double room to myself. Also found out that there are 2 other Canadian females traveling on their own so I quickly made plans to see what Athens have to offer tomorrow, also found out that many of the sites had...
Athens, Attica, Greece evelyn.ngThe sites were free! Woke up and met the other 2 Canadians, Jill and M.C. and bought a 24 hour metro card and quickly made our way to Syntagamma where we caught the Changing of the Guard parade, it wasn't quite the full formal one, but it was still interesting and cool to see at the same time. The guards wore skirts, with white leggings, and had pom poms on their shoes. I may have giggled a bit when I first saw them...may have. Wandered our way to the Acropolis and confirmed the rumours that ...
Athens, Attica, Greece evelyn.ng Woke up late and met up with M.C. to finalize plans for the rest of the trip. Will have to get up super early tomorrow and head to Delphi, spend some tme there before heading to Kampalabaka, Meteora. From there take a train back to Athens where hopefully we can take an overnight ferry to Santorini.
With that being planned and it being Easter Sunday, MC and I headed down to Plaka and I bought 2 pairs of leather sandals. A bit pricey, but I figure I was going to spend the money in Athens an...
Travel Tips:
Airport to Hostel Aphrodite- we took a bus from the airport to Syntagma Square which took a little over an hour. The bus number was X95 and you can get it right outside the airport. I think this bus comes once every 20 minutes. Cost for bus was 3.2 Euro. Then from Syntagma Square we took the metro to Larissa Station. The metro was 1.00 Euro. Later we found out you can get a 7 day pass for 10.00 Euro, we did this and we were very happy about it! Then from Larissa Station we...
The French Connection: The Sequel Here's a funny thing. After three nights in Istanbul, who should we meet on the train? The French Connection, and the Oz Girls! We all just decided to leave that day. Maybe not a huge coincidence when you consider only one train ran each day, but still. Small world. The train broke down several times on the way back. One time we were waiting for two hours for another engine car. The locals ("Refugees", as Karim called them) all got out and started to make a f...
Athens, Greece foolsgoldWe arrived in Athens yesterday afternoon. To be truthful, nobody had told us that they loved Athens, and few even liked it, but because we are both very interested in the history of the city, we thought it would be enjoyable no matter what. However, as we walked through the sketchy area where our hostel was located, we began to reconsider. Hotel Aphrodite was an average hostel in an absolutely terrible (dirty, smelly and filled with shady characters) neighbourhood. We spent yesterday evening...
Athens, Greece jessicaeYesterday we flew from Rome to Athens on a decent flight. After a long trek from the airport to the hostel, we attempted to climb Likavitos Hill. After being told a couple of times it would only take 15-30 minutes, we realized that it would definitely take more than that! So, halfway up, we decided to go back down. We then decided we wanted to watch the sunset. Halfway through, we decided we were done. Soooo, we went back to our hostel and ate a homemade Greek dinner with a lot of fun fellow ...
Athens, Attica, Greece katyandkallieHere it is... our last blog entry- a bitter-sweet thing really. AS sad as we are to leave Europe and our travels behind, we are excited for our OWN beds, a shower with WATER pressure, SPICY food, and of course all of you: our friends and family. We are both exhausted, and touristed out, so we took our last day to relax and enjoy the wonderful Greece sun. We slept in a little this morning , after staying up until about 2:30 am talking to our Canadian roommates. We then made our way to the bus ...

... and cocktails) we decided to explore the not-so-big island by scooter. For those who have been to Indonesia, the roads are very similar, crazy! We went to Manganari beach (a beautiful, more secluded beach) and spent the day. We had lunch at Christos Taverna, another spot the Aussie episode.... hehe. You will see a photo of what I (Kate) ordered as Kalamari.... I FREAKED out when it arrived!! Evern Andy couldn`t do what I left (yes, people I attempted it!!). But hey ...
