Ever been in a bus that hit a water buffalo?
This event is worthy of its own blog.
Lauren and I left Vang Vieng in search of the magical island of Dhon Det in southern Laos. It was a long bus ride but a beautiful spot (we were told) so worth it. The bus ride went through the night so we took a VIP sleeper bus …
Ankor Wat - Siem Reap
Last minute on board, first sight of Angkor Wat
The flight from Taiwan to Phnom Penh delayed for half an hour, and I have only 70 mins transfer time. I worried a bit, but there's nothing I could do. So I had to think to myself, if I cannot catch my flight, just take the next one, pay the fine, learn a lesson, next time leave more time for transfer.
I arrived around 1220, exactly 30 min …
Into the Inferno
After we stayed on the island we came back to Otres Beach for one night before booking the 10hour sleeper bus to Siem Reap. The space you get closely resembles a shoe box. I resorted to taking a few valium to try and help me sleep but they were about as much use as a cock flavoured lollypop. 3 hours kip maximum would be my estimate.

Journey to the centre of the country
... After a few hours, the sun began to wane and I hoped that we were finally approaching Siem Reap. On cue, the bus slowed “Ah, finally, here we are” I foolishly thought. The bus pulled off the road into yet another bl*ody rest stop! Aaarrggh!!! So yet again we de-bussed, and stood like lemons whilst the bus drivers ate yet another meal, no wonder they were on the wrong side of fifteen stone each! “This is turning into the worst bus ride we have ...

TravelPod Member ReviewsHostel Siem Reap - HI
$13 for a double room, friendly staff, excellent location, really clean rooms. Fan was a bit crappy. Showers had good temperature and power. Would recommend

Generally okay, but the bathroom is really small. I stayed in a 6-bed shareroom, no shelf, these little things that make the stay somewhat uncomfortable.
I rented its bike, $2 a day, not worth it. Go rent outside. Not enough public space. Staff are friendly but due to its area (no paved road in front of it), dusty floor --you have to take off your shoe to get in at the entrance.
