To Zacatecas

Zacatecas was awesome. We had the best time there so far on the trip. It's a little town of about 150,000 people that sits pretty much in the middle of Mexico. It's pretty hilly, and itīs at about 7,500 feet above sea level, so you get winded pretty easily. We stayed at the Hostel Villa Colonial, which had a great location, great staff, great rooms, a great roof patio, and great people staying there. There's also a great bakery right around the corner where you can get a couple big pastries f...

Trip back on track in Zacatecas

Have spent a very enjoyable couple of days in Zacatecas - itīs a great city and definitely got my trip back on track after a couple of disappointing stopovers in Mazatlan and Durango. Staying in a very good hostel Villa Colonial which is also a big improvement on the rather grotty hotels I stayed at in the last places. I so much prefer hostels to the "budget" hotels - they have a good communal atmosphere & opportunities to meet lots of other travellers , tend to be cheaper in the shared d...

Week 7 - Zacatecas to Mexico City

Week 7 Sept 13 - Zacatecas (Mexico) Have decided today will be my last day in Durango so I can spend more time (hopefully 1 week) in Zacatecas which everyone raves about as being a really chilled and atmospheric city with loads to do. Had some chores to do; buy new trousers (my current ones have been sun-bleached and are already falling to pieces..bloody hell, only had them for 2 months), post a parcel to UK (postage prices are well expensive here..paid $12 for a fairly light one) and interne...

Guadalupe (Zacatecas) - Are We in the Right Place?

... In 1998 I wanted to do some solo bicycle touring in Spain. I decided that the "El Camino de Santiago", a 800 kilometer pilgrimage trail from St. Jean Pied de Port in the French Pyrénées, across northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela, located in the province of Galicia, would be just perfect. Some of the many highlights of this tour were seeing the "running of the bulls" through the streets of Pamplona, the cathedrals in ...

... the Virgin said to be capable of healing the sick and thousands flock here every year. Next to the chapel stand three large equestrian statues of the victors of the battle of Zacatecas, Villa, Angeles and Panfilo Nateram The views over the town showed how colourful it was as well as being able to see the cathedral and old mission next to the square started by the Conquistadores. Now back at the camp for the night.

La Feria de Zacatecas and Vincente

... The resemblance of Zacatecas was very similar to certain parts of the Phlippines. They style of buildings, signs, cars, were so similar. Mexico and the Phlippines were both spanish colonies long before which is the reason why they are so similar in resemblance. Zacatecas is a colonial city with wonderful spanish baroque architecture. There are stone paved roads which reminded me of the streets of Florence. There is some traffic here, but not too much so ...

Weekend in Zacatecas

"What happens in Zacatecas stays in Zacatecas"...so became our motto on the bus ride home. Another great weekend in another great Mexican city, which happens to be another UNESCO World Heritage Site (México seems to have a lot of them, and for good reason - it truly is a beautiful country!), August 3-5, 2007. After finishing a couple midterms at the end of the week, we were all set again to leave Guadalajara in ...

A Rodeo And Its Aftermath

... and shouting abuse were the main tactics. One by one our players withdrew to the wall as the hapless bull turned this way and that, provoked by some new feat of bravado. The goal remained intact. Slowly, the opposition encroached from the rear. One of their number gave the bull a hefty slap on the hindquarters and raced off across the arena as fast as his legs could carry him. But it wasn't fast enough and the bull caught up with its assailant bringing him to ground with an ...

Adventures Along The Silver Trail

... that perhaps Sombrerete had been some kind of luxuriant dream. A long day's ride, interrupted by a spate of punctures, carried me across the flanks of the Sierra Madre Occidental to the edge of Fresnillo, one hundred kiometres to the south. The slender poles of adolescent yuccas, lined the route, their spiky green fronds as lurid as a Chernobyl toilet brush. By now I was in the tropics, although at two and a half thousand metres there was a discernable chill abroad ...
