We arrived in Arequipa early in the morning at around 6.30am. We had read that the climate in Arequipa was perfect with only 5 days a year without sunshine and we certainly were not disappointed on arrival. Arequipa is set in a valley surrounded by numerous snow peaked volcanos. It is a quite spectacular setting. We caught a taxi to our hostal and dumped our bags. We were hoping to meet up with Tess and Matt (of Inca Trail fame) who we knew were staying at the same hostal, but we figured that...
In ...
Arequipa, Peru kasia.alanHOwever, Sarah and I have tried to make the best of things in Peru in the meantime. We landed in Lima ("a shithole", according to, errm, me) and the plan was to leave quickly for the mountains in Huaraz. Plans were quickly scuppered by a national strike/protest against general stuff, which meant that the main Pan-Americana highway was barricaded and we couldn´t get through. Lima at this time of year is covered by a thick layer of grey smog which makes it about as attractive as a wet weekend i...
Arequipa, Peru rhyshero Just when I thought the worst of my bus journeys were over I got a full cama sauna from Cusco to Arequipa - it was so hot that all my clothes were soaked with sweat and I even had to take my t-shirt off for a while. Most unpleasant. The bus that is, not me with my t-shirt off. I'm hot.
Arriving at 5.30 in the a.m. was not ideal either, but thankfully the nice bloke in Hostal Santa Catalina was willing to let me check in and go to bed for a while. Arequipa is much cheaper than C...
While trekking in the canyon, we got talking to one of our temporary fellow adventurers, an American named Mahlon. Turns out he was quite keen, as were a few of us, to try to scale one of the volcanic peaks standing sentinel-like overlooking Arequipa. The choice was either El Misti, the slightly cheaper (US$65), stand-alone conular mound of steep brown slopes, culminating at 5850m or so, or else Nevado Chachani, a multi-peaked snow-capped mountain range rising to 6075m but costing and extra U...
Arequipa, Peru roryd... and i couldnt eat it all.
Then we stopped at a local bar where this lady made chicha beer, which is made from corn. We all got a taste , it wasn´t too bad. I went to the bathroom and dropped my camera in the toilet. There was lots of drama over whether it was going to work or not. That thing made it around the world with me for 5 months.. i couldn´t lose it now!
We arrived in the city we´d be spending the night in, Ollantaytambo, and visited the ruins there ...
After an agonising decision the night before, between climbing another mountain or heading to some natural springs the decision was almost unanimous. Three days and nights without washing won and we start our day knowing we will be ending it all alot cleaner!
We continue our descent down in to the cloud forrest, nervous at times as the fog closes in. Jimmy is unfazed though and skips on ahead with us gringo´s plodding along behind. There are a few sore legs ...
... the Sun". The site was the main religious center for the Incas and had amazing stone work! When the Spaniards came to town, they decided it would make a great foundation for one of their own churches and so, using the existing structure, built right on top. The complex is quite big and is a really strange mix-mash of Incan and Spanish architecture. The museum underneath the temple gardens was kinda weird ...
Cusco, Peru bethj... it up.
We had already orderd but I´m still looking over the menu (2 pages of juice combos alone!). One combo listed is naranja/tuna. I´m thinking, WOW...I´ve had some pretty strange things here, but this is crazy! Who would want to drink tunafish ?!? And how gross would that taste - BLECH!
Raquel and I are looking at the different fresh fruit displayed and she starts naming them ...
... out like the previous night. This morning we got up and walked to the bus station to go to Chinchero. This town was not as busy as Pisac. We climbed up many stairs to get to the main plaza and toured a church. There were also inca ruins and terraces here, but not on the same scale as Pisac. We hiked around the ruins (great view of snow-covered mountains in the background ...
