Return to the ends of the earth

Well now that we have our breath back, phew, we are back on terra firma in Tierra del Fuego. The name translates as the land of fire, so called because early explorers seen the indigenous people's fires dotted along the coast line. No wonder they had fires lit: it wasn't a smokeless zone, they hadn't got their grant from the Corporation to get central heating in and of course they were running about starkers ;-) The Argies instigated a penal colony (that's a prison Mark) here in the 1800's an...

Ushuaia

The journey to Ushuaia was long and weary with yet another camera being lost along the route ( we think we left it in Santiago airport but not sure)

Almost at The End of The World

Argentina´s Ushuaia is officially the ¨world´s most southern city¨ and sits on the northen banks of the Beagle Channel in Tierra del Fuego. The southern-most town is called Puerto Williams and lies on the other side of the channel in Chile.

Ushuaia is pretty small and I suppose calling itself a city rather than a town avoids it having a rather unassuming tag of ¨Ushuaia -the world´s most southern town apart from that one in Chile that we don´t like to talk about¨.

We had quite ...

It´s the end of the world as we know it...

... here and there. Easy views are had of the harbor and container yards that help cater to the areas fishing and mining economy.

Day 2 was the day to be had. It was our day to sail the Beagle Channel on vessel ¨If...¨ and see what is the southernmost point in Argentina. (Chile has the southernmost land in the Americas) It was a beautiful blue sky day with strong winds from the northwest. We were a bit skeptical of the weather to be ...

Glaciar Martial e muita neve

... usando botas. O correto seria ter as raquetes de neve. Olhei o vale a minha frente e era muito bonito, mas nao seguiria sozinho. Voltei um pouco e logo avistei um casal que subia. Fiquei contente e segui com eles mais alguns minutos. Tiramos fotos e logo a mulher desistiu e voltaram.

Mais uma vez, eu queria continuar. O lugar parecia me chamar a continuar. Eh claro que nao chegaria ao glaciar, na verdade ele estah totalmente ...

Ushuaia Basurero

... like the landfill . Even the humble Bar-winged Cinclodes basks in the basurero. Perhaps most enthusiastic, 3 species of caracara (including my lifer White-throated Caracara) delight in the dump . After a while I realized my survey was biased to those respondents who were already inclined to respond favourably . So I took my extremely scientific and unflawed survey to the forest. However, I ...

Heading south for the winter

... hostel was good too, can recommend it but like everything down here was a bit more expensive than I was used to due to the remote-ness of the place. Took a 12 hour bus journey to Punta Arenas in Chile, but it meant that 1) I got to see an amazing sunrise over Tierra del Fuego and 2) on the ferry ride over to the mainland we saw Commersons dolphins playing in the surf in the Magellan Strait! Great stuff! Richy

Ushuaia -the end of the world (apparently)

... we managed a trip in the Beagle Channel to see some penguins up close! On the way we passed the much photographed "flat trees" which are so windswept that they grow sideways, so of course we took some photos! We also saw the ski resorts and huskies used for sled rides in winter, it´s be an interesting ski destination but considering it´s dark by 3pm you´d have to be up and out on the piste early to make to most of it! To see the penguins we chose ...

CHAPTER 2: YOU SAY PAMPAS, I SAY NAPPIES

... the local cops come and chat to us and tell us where to go and where to stay away from. The country may be uninspiring but the people are all friendly. Dirt has permeated every single seam of our clothes and bags - our visors are caked and our teeth are gritty with fine clay. 650 kilometres today and we are shattered - by the time the bikes are parked and we are sheltered, fed, beered and ice creamed (ritual, don't mess with it!) it's 11:30PM.
