The city of Arequipa, called "Ciudad Blanca" (white city) for the color of the houses built with sillar (white stone of volcanoes origin), is a picturesque place that combines the beauty of its green country side with the imposing prescense of volcanoes and snowy mountains. The city is surrounded by three volcanoes: The Misti (5.822 m.a.s.l.). The Chachani (6.075 m.a.s.l.). The Pichu Pichu (5.664 m.a.s.l.). It is also the place to head if you want to trek through the deepest canyon in the wor...
Arequipa, Peru bobdeehamillI hate Lima. Its busy and ugly and noisy. And ive been ill so no fun. I watched wimbledon all the time on the cable in Lima Centro but since getting to miraflores ive met some nice folks who will forever be in my debt for naming ´happy trousers' and talking about manchester. cheers laura, jo, brooklyn adam and alex from landon.
Lima, Peru fe_wyldAfter an excellent overnight bus ride from Nazca -- relatively speaking of course -- we arrived in Arequipa, a nice city with many shops featuring alpaca products and a lot of churches and museums. We spent our time hanging out with Ross and a couple other guys we met along the way. Bryce decided it was a good time for a shopping spree. We surprisingly attended a museum tour all about the ice princess Juanita -- a 500 year old mummy of a young girl almost entirely preserved - internal organs,...
Lima, Peru leskovarWe arrived early in the morning in Arequipa´s bus station. We didn´t get any bingo on the bus but we did get dinner, breakfast and films in English. The bus station had a hotel booking kiosk with free pickups so we chose the place we are staying which is very nice and we have a great room in a big old building. As we arrived so early we went to the Museum Santuarios Andinos where they display Juanita, the frozen mummy of a 12 or 13 year old Inca girl who was sacrificed to the gods on Mount Am...
Arequipa, Arequipa, Peru mariejeanwilsonHola!! I have finally arrived in South America proper. Somewhere I have always wanted to go. Somewhere that has always sounded crazy and unorganised. Dangerous and unknown. But there has always been that pull towards coming here. Secondly only to what might be a lot of peoples favorite, Brazil, I have decided that Peru should be the place to start the adventure for real. I intent to spend the next 9 or 10 weeks travelling down the west coast of South America before heading over east. I have h...
Lima, Peru quinny The KLM plane over to Lima was much nicer with individual screens and lots of movies. I watched Time Traveller´s Wife, the Proposal, Public Enermies.
On the plane there is a big proportion of indigenious people, and the most commonly spoken language is Spanish. There is also a surprisingly large number of travelling infants which was really cute! Finally, when the plane touched down, everyone started clapping!
Upon arriving in the airport, I decided to explore the airport as i...
We got up, had breakfast (included with the room), and immediately got started. We began at Exposition Park. I think this might have been a world´s fair park, or something like it. Either way it was neat. There were some pretty neat buildings, some clown statues, and some places to just sit and enjoy nature. I enjoyed it.
We kept walking north towards the center of downtown, the Plaza Mayor. On the way, we passed the dingiest Sheraton I´ve ever seen. When we got close, we could te...
We split a cab to the airport from our hotel. The cab driver doesn't care how many people share, so we made 5 of us fit. The tab was 9 sols ($3) split 5 ways- the cheapest taxi I've ever taken.
We flew to Lima and got a pretty good view of the Andes from the plane.
Upon landing, we did my favorite activity- took the bus! We took the bus to Miraflores, the wealthier part of town. It was about a 45 minute ride for 2 sols (66 cents). It was just as fun as riding the bus was the other ...
The overnight bus arrived early in Arequipa (Peru´s 2nd largest city). It was a braw bus too - a little extra expense gave us more comfy reclining seats, plus dinner and breakfast too. The terminal had an information counter - a first, and we booked a hostel, which sent a free taxi to pick us up - definitely in tourist territory now! Checked into the old colonial Posada del Parque just a few blocks from the Plaza de Armas. Arequipa is surrounded by three 5500m+ volcanoes, all presumed dormant...
Arequipa, Arequipa, Peru tartanbeat... create a border around the downstairs living space of the facility. I was waiting for the Doc to bring the needed contacts when Jose asked for help climbing the stairs to find his crutch. His hands work perfectly, I grabbed both of them with my own and we started up the wooden steps. For him this simple task is a daily reminder that he is different. One by one using his arms to pull his way up...slowly but surely we ascended. My ...
Chaclacayo, Peru rwathne... fog is rolling in off the Pacific Ocean, the sun slowly burning it off. We walk several blocks trying to find breakfast. We find a hole in the wall restaurant and have a healthy breakfast of white rice, day old chicken, bread and coffee tinto. We made our way through the desert towards Lima, as we approach we are astonished to see a city in the middle of the desert. These shacks are commonly known as the slums off ...
