We just arrived back from an amazing trip to Colca Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world (4,160 m). Early in the morning we managed to see condors flying over the canyon, these birds are amazing! First day we hiked down the whole way from the top to the river at the bottom, where we stayed in nice small huts. Second day we hiked along the canyon side to another small village, where we could visit thermal pools and stay the second night, before heading back to ...

... and all the trails we had taken in 3 days. The landslide section had really drained us and by the time we reached the top we were both really tired and happy to take our packs off as we headed back into Cabanaconde. There weren’t any buses as it was a public holiday but we managed to hitch a ride with a local in the back of his Toyota Hilux and we enjoyed the 1.5hr ride to Chivay in the open air looking at the ...

We planned to trek from Cabanaconde at the very top of one side of the canyon, to Llahuar at the very bottom, then up to the very top of the opposite side of the canyon to Fure, then back down to the bottom again to an oasis called San Galle, and then back up to Cabanaconde, where we started. It was a challenging loop with some ridiculously steep ups and downs, and ...

... CV's, we signed up for a 3 day/2 night exploration of the canyon, stopping off along the way to visit villages, landscapes dominated by volcanoes, evidence of Pre-Inca activity and lots of llamas. Unlike Machu Picchu Day 1 was spent mostly in our minibus, along with our guide Paul and new team mates Kaitlin & Katherine (Canadian), Alex & Wendy (London), James, Becs & Emma (Australian), Florian (French), David (US) and a Canadian couple whose names I've forgotten. Day 2 ...

    Condors of Colca Canyon

    ... and grateful.

After spending about an hour with the condors, we headed back to Chivay to the mineral springs. Only a couple of us enjoyed a swim in the warm pools – you know me and swimming, I was the first in. Then onto a local restaurant for a delicious buffet lunch before heading back to Arequipa. A stop on the way at a viewpoint to see a set of volcanoes, one still smoking from an eruption ...
