      ... Our stopover in Chivay is brief and wet as we leave early again the following morning for a spot of bird watching. The canyon at its deepest is 4x deeper than the Grand Canyon but 1/10th in length, however we don't get to see that today. We arrive in time to watch the thermals develop and the condors rise up from the river far below, to be rewarded with closeups as the condors soar away ...

      ... one! And a third, very far away, close to the mountains on the other side! Three condors! Oh I felt so lucky! I did not have the time to take pictures so you just will have to believe me!

      ... to a minimum. We begin our descent into the town of Chivay at the head of the Colca Canyon where we will overnight before an early rise to continue down the canyon. We take a short hike to a stone constructed observation " tower " with great views of Chivay and the volcanos in the distance.

      ... bus station had left us with the impression that it was possible to go to a nameless junction some way away at which we would wait for another bus to a second town and thence to Puno.
