... but with tiny little twigs with leaves on them. I thought at this height of about 4000meters I would give some altitude training a go, I did a quick 350m run around the area only to find how hard it was to breath... I expected there may be some difficulty, I just never expected it would be that hard to breath, I ran my normal pace and at the end I was gasping for breath. On the way to our next point we passed some of the local camelids, these ...

... easier to travel to Arequipa.

On the way down into Chivay, where our hotel would be, we drove into the caldera of an ancient volcano. Quickly leaving the hotel, we drove for 90 minutes to the Colca Canyon which is depper than the Grand Canyon in the US. After loading our bags onto the bus, and getting comfortable in our seats, we had a look around - there was only one other couple on the bus! As we started to drive up the hills and out of ...

... where we spent the night in a little bamboo lodge. The next morning we started walking at 5am in order to reach the top of the canyon before the sun was too strong. After 3/4 of the way up I was pretty pooped but Mr Motivator kept me moving upwards on the promise of bananas and peanut m&ms at the top! Beautiful views as the sun rose. Breakfast in nearby Cabanaconde, then a trip to some hot springs and the bus back to Arequipa stopping at a couple more viewpoints along the ...
