A climb up a cliff and FINALLY a beach!

I was sooo happy to be in Arica, because it is a coastal town. I actually teared up a little bit when I saw the ocean. I arrived around 8pm on Monday, after a full day of travel and was pretty tired. I checked in to my hotel, then went to eat at El Arriero and had some great salmon. I went back, had a rare cigarette, read a bit and then went to sleep - with the TV on. First thing on Tuesday I walked to the nearest beach. Unfortunately it's not well taken care of and in order to get to the wat...

The extreme north of Chile

Km 16180 - Arica Almost two month ago I was in the southernmost city of Chile, Punta Arenas, and now I arrived in the northernmost one, Arica, some 5200km to the north if you use the Patagonian ferry and Ruta 5 but of course I went a longer way through Argentina. Arica is very close to both Peru and Bolivia, the city of Tacna (Peru) is only 65km away by train and La Paz (Bolivia) a mere 300km away through Parque Nacional Lauca which is the main tourist attraction of the region. Arica used to ...

... to see San Marcos Church. The church was designed by Gustav Eiffel, built in France and shipped over in pieces to be assembled at the base of the cliff El Morro which was the sight of a major naval victory in the early 19th century war between Chile and Peru.

On Wednesday we woke up, had another one of Franklin's breakfasts and headed for the Terminal Terrestre to begin our 29 hour, 2085 kilometer bus ride down Chile's coast to Santiago. See you from the Capital!

Beaches, Booze, and Buddies..

... looked like death, certainly felt like it (well not Jason who was still slightly intoxicated...), and were not really in good spirits for the 12 hour journey ahead. Alec managed to make it with minutes to spare, and the four of us spent the morning catching up on some zzz's prior to the lunchtime stop.

Now let me tell you about lunchtime... it was included in the ticket, and whilst you don't come to expect a whole lot from bus ...

... Atacama.

Arica, just across the border

... sick on buses (and im sitting next to her). We hit off a little after 1 and the journey was to last 6 hours, the driver was a maniac drivin at least 70 around nearly 90 degree bends, we were being thrown from side to side the whole way. I was nearly sick and Catriona was seriously shook. We eventully made it without any sick incidents which was a minor miricle. When we got there we had to find a way to cross the border into Chile and it was 8 at night. We headed to ...

... owner of the hostel. It turned out to be quite a journey, crossing disused railway lines and accidentally wandering into military zones of the port. When we finally made it, it was just a little bit depressing. All the food stalls were shut down, half the playground had been roped off with what looked like police tape, the part that was open had a few stray dogs hanging around it, and the sand on the beach itself was a charming black ...
