Saturday we caught the bus that picks up in the hotel forecourt and takes you into the city centre. From here it’s a short walk to the old part of the city. On the way we had a tour of the indoor food market which was selling fresh fish, meat, mostly pork, vegetables, fruit and pastries.

... the old town. We squeezed through a very narrow archway in an old wall, and hey presto, there we were! There was a large old church in the centre of the main square, with cafes and bars under the archways all around the perimeter.
We chose Cafe Marlene which looked interesting... all decked out in black and white art deco, with posters of Hollywood greats on the walls, gold mirrors and TVs showing old Hollywood film stars. A good choice, it had an ...

Just, whoa.
... time making an absolute fool of myself speaking Spanish to a native was hilarious-I've never seen a face that full of confusion, and laughter and pity before (I asked her how to use the pay phone). With the ounce of Spanish that I do have, I was able to find out where the main Plaza was, buy ice cream like a pro, get directions to an ATM to get money, and buy a souvenir. Get ready Salamanca, it's only day one! ...
