So although our stay suggets that we visited hospital Santa Cruz, luckily we didnt, just. Banos is adventure capital of Ecuador, and has the added adrenaline rush of no insurance policies and slightly worn ropes. We are also staying on South Americas most active volcano, which the fearless lonely planet describes as īsuicidalī to climb, so we got a taxi up it instead, and had a fancy cocktail overlooking Banos next to a lava flow.

First stop Biking. Al and Lucy hire a couple of bikes,...

Banos

Becca.. After feeling sick in Quito (and sick of the cold/rain), I was happy to head to our next destination - Banos. The town is called this not because of the abudance of bathrooms, but rather the abundance of hot springs. After dropping our stuff in our hostel, we walked around town to check it out - it was a Saturday night and buzzing with activity around the church. We walked over to discover a band of clowns playing music, and colorful men on stilts walking around. Both sort of freaked ...

Baņos - Bikes And Baths

It was with a huge sigh of relief that we finally rolled out of Quito, passports and money in hand. We had a small heart attack on the bus when we watched another couple of "Gringo" travelers get on the bus with a man who so obviously was not employed by the bus company. They allowed him to "guide" them to their seats and then let him put their bag up on the rack above their heads. (This is something that we were warned from day one never to do as people will just grab your bag from above you...

The Devils Cauldron

14 hours after leaving Vilcabamba, 2 taxi rides and a bus ride later, we arrived at Banos (meaning Baths), so called for all the hot springs around the area. It is also right at the base of the Tungurahua volcano. Tunguahua is an active volcano with its most recent eruption in 2006. Apparently you can see lava glowing and bubbling every night. So on our second night we got a lift with the local īrave busī, an old coverted cargo lorry complete with fairy lights, grafitti, and a stereo blasting...

Sunny Banos - Bikes,Waterfalls,Trekking & Rummy

I moved on from Latacunga to Banos which is a town in a very picturesque setting. The town itself , aside from the thermal baths which give the place it's name , seems to consist mostly of an extraordinarily large number of hostels and tour agencies which have sprung up to serve the very large number of foreign travellers in what is a small town. Banos sits in the shadow of a volcano , Tungarahua , which became active again in 1999 after 80 years being dormant and has had some major eruptions...

Baņos, bike, volcano?

Baņos is a beautiful resort town nestled in the Andes mountains - filled with beautiful haciendas, cafes, and tourists. Today we rented bikes and rode 30 km - mostly downhill - to Pailon del Diablo - a beautiful waterfall with a cafe at the bottom. We ditched our bikes and started to hike down the canyon to the base of the waterfall - on route we saw comic book guy resting on a rock in the shade. He looked pretty beat. The hike was gorgeous - no worries Ithaca. The rocks were covered with mos...

Nyttaarsaften i Baņos

Nyttaarsaften ble feiret i Baņos sammen med Jolien og Richard. Artig kveld med uvante tradisjoner. Kun tre bilder har sluppet gjennom sensuren. Godt nyttaar!

Baņos is know to be anoutdoorsyy touristhot spott, and for good reason. From here, you can do just about everything from trekking, mountain biking, rafting, canyoningg and a wide variety ofoff roadd vehicle activities. We got to Baņos a little late in the day and therwasn'tnt all that much to do, iwaswrainingng. We hiked up a few of the hills and looked for some vistas, but it was generally uneventful. Some tiny dog scared the **** out of me, I jumped, high. A nice couple froSwedenen&nbsta...

Traveling....

December The month of December was off to a fun start as I celebrated my 28th birthday in Cuenca! My roommates went all out for my birthday to make it extra special. It was the first of many birthdays to be spent away from home. They made me a homemade chocolate cake, brownies and jello shots! We went to my friend's house to celebrate .Then headed to a karaoke bar to so do some singings. Of course we ended the night dancing at POP! On Sunday my actual birthday, we make a big family breakfast ...

... our brakes would hold and, after a while, stopped off to admire the view. There are numerous waterfalls spilling down into the central river valley from the surrounding mountains and some of them are rather impressive.

After the first stop came quite a hairy moment... We had to go through a tunnel. On bikes. With no lights. Or helmets. It was possibly the scariest thing I've done so far on this trip as, although the tunnel was not particularly long, there was a bus at ...
