... which made the day beautiful, hard as hell, slightly miserable and easy to walk away from. Well sort of, we actually slid down on our butts much of the way, and that was certainly worth it! ... up it was wonderfully exhilarating and of course it's just you, the mountain and the views.
Villarica was one of the toughest hikes I've done and one of the best. The only one that comes close is when I climbed Scafell in the lake district and that was only 964m above sea level. Having said that we started at the bottom of that one and weren't able to slide back down. Either way I love a good hike and Nepal is calling for huge hikes and yoga retreats. ... the soft snowy slopes 'like a monkey' and having seen several monkeys running on their hind legs whilst carrying something I did think it was a good description! It was brilliant and we all wanted a second go down again if only we could face the hike up. By the time I got down to Rosario's house I was exhausted and needed a quick seista before we headed out to dinner. ... easier as the conditions changed from rock to snow. Another hour passed of upward climbing, winding our way up in the snow, all the time trying to regulate our temperature, freezing hands when you stop, boiling hot as your thighs burned, wind chill hitting your poor exposed cheeks. We then hit the glacier (c.2000m), which was exposed from any rock cover, meaning the wind chill increased as did the gradient; the fluffy snow had turned to hard ice which given the 60 degree ...
