una Fiesta for our departure

The volunteers that have been helping up from the Diocese of Chulucanas sent us off with a great farewell to wrap up the campaign. We had a great meal on Wednesday followed by some local dancers showing us the traditional dances of Peru and the costumes were beautiful. They even invited some of us to get up and dance with them, by the end of the night almost everyone had hit the dance floor ...

Hurry up and wait

Such is the essence of South American travel. Hurry up and run from one bus station to grab a taxi and high-tail it to the other terminal across town, only to find out that the midday bus has been mysteriously canceled without explanation, and that we must now wait 9 hours for the night bus to arrive, wait 9 hours in a town with nothing to do but drink and watch movies in the bus terminal on my laptop - and then be charged for the ...

another day in the books...

Saturday Update:

Today Joe and I went on "balloon rounds" blowing up balloons and drawing faces on them for the kids to cheer them up and keep them entertained. My cheeks are killing me but I'm not sure if it's from the balloons or smiling? The greatest moment was seeing Clementina running around bounding a balloon in the air-she's the one who had the severe burn on her neck that ...

thanks to the Big Guy

Affirmation that the man upstairs is watching over our team came yesterday in a big way. We had a normal morning, rounds and discharges- lots of happy and thankful families going home as well as new hopeful families showing up. The surgical teams were rolling through like the well-oiled machines that they are and then things got complicated. A patient who had a uterine fibroid removed began bleeding internally, everyone kicked into ...

Hasta Luego!

We've seen a number of patients get discharged this morning to start the trek home, often this involves a combination of walking, riding a bus or truck or sometimes a burro. It's amazing to think that after having surgery a few days ago these patients are going to be doing this. It ...

... care. That team is 4 physicians, 2 nurses and a translator and they saw 250 patients over the last few days. Word is they saw a lot of infections and parasites which was to be expected so we spent the better part of the day today getting their supplies replenished...if I never see a Flintstone vitamin or Cipro again I will be okay after this!

One case today that is unbelievable is that they scheduled a surgery to remove an IUD that had migrated through ...

Day 120 - Piura - On the breadline

... and it leaves Sullana at 9pm, about half an hour after we got it. He seemed genuine enough so we went for it.

At first this seemed like a bad choice. The terminal at Sullana was quite small, there were no ATM’s and the bus leaving to Lima was full. I felt like we were on the brink of a disaster but help was at hand. Christie went off with our friendly guide Richard who was able, it seems, to pull some strings. It turned out we had $26 and 27 soles. First they had to ...

Talara – Sullana (90 kms)

We began the day by cycling back up the hill and along the road from whence we came yesterday, I really dislike having to do that. We didn't set off at the crack of dawn because we were hoping to stop off at the huge supermarket at the top of the hill for travelling food. When we got there at 8.30 it was still closed, so then we had to try and find ...

Bus chance in Sullana

So, unlike what I had thought, which was that I was going straight North through "Aguas Verdes", we went South to Sullana, in Piura, and then headed up North to Ecuador through Macara. I met a nice Ecuadorian guy on the bus over, from Loja... we waited around for our bus to Ecuador to arrive, and we left around 9.45pm.

Zoooming through northern Peru

... a small group of jagged stone peaks covered in thousands and thousands of birds, crooning and swooping across the sea and sky. On the shore of the larger islands hundreds of sea lions basked in the sun and barked at each other and the passing tour boats. It was beyond imagination - one of the most amazing natural habitats we've seen. Our tour then took us to several beautiful vistas including a ...
