I only got to spend one day in the actual city of Arequipa, but what little I saw was nonetheless worth seeing. I stayed at "Home Sweet Home," a friendly place though a bit far from the central plaza. My first stop was the Museo Santury, where they have a fascinating exhibit on "Juanita the ice princess." Juanita was an Incan girl, most likely of high social status, who was offered by the Incas as a human sacrifice to the mountain gods. Researchers found her extremely well preserved body not ...
Arequipa, Peru arnykimAn overnight bus to ´the white city´ got me, J and two other girls to a lovely little hostel with a pancake and eggs breakfast. Hell yes. If you´re ever in Arequipa, ´Home Sweet Home´ is highly recommended. The city is less touristy than Cusco, and also feels more developed and businesslike. No traditional folk costumes here, or babies in back-shawls. It feels more solid, more elegant, and a little more sure of itself. People don´t mob you in the street to sell you Alpaca wool. The kind of ci...
Arequipa, Peru atlanticheSo i might be writing a little too often, but i missed the bus to the hot springs in Chipay, due to the fact that i couldn´t find my hostel! Considering it was called a restaurant and i didn´t even know the name of that you can hardly blame me! So I´m here to kill two hours before the traditional dancing show. I chose my own adventure and caught an overnight bus to Araquipa, the second largest city in Peru, which is the gateway to the deepest canyon in the world (recently measured in 2005... ...
Arequipa, Peru jojo_bartonIf I had access to a computer or phone on the first ¨real¨ day of the hike, I would have begged and pleaded everyone to pool their money to rent a helicopter to get me out the pure hell that I was in. But I´m here typing in the Varig lounge in the Lima airport, so I´m obviously alive. I´m waiting for my flight to Rio, so I´ll see how much I can get in. Wednesday morning we left Cuzco City, which used to be the capital city of the Inca Empire, through the sacred valley following a path of Inca...
Inca Trail, Peru kimberlysarnaMonday - Alicia and I were set the task of getting tonight's tickets to Arequipa - so naturally we got the cheapest. ´Ecobus´ was aptly named when we arrived with barely a second to spare at the battered looking bus and no conductor in site, we were certainly riding with the ´gente´ but i still say it was 100% better than the so called quality one we arrived on! Before the joys of the bus we dragged Dave out of the hostel to explore the parts of Cuzco we had missed. The delightful San Blas re...
Arequipa, Peru lizzatwellCommos Dias Dudes. Well I´m in the city of Arequippa, down in the south of Peru, and I´ve got to say, it´d probably give Cusco a real run for its money in terms of overall interest, and activity. A real gem of a place. Today, I went white water rafting on the Rio Chili, and thankfully it wasn´t that chilly. It´s only about 45mins out of the city. It was an afternoon trip, we left at 1 and were back at 4.30 with just over an hour riding the waves, mainly class 2s and 3s with one class 4 rapid....

The last few days have been long, but worth it. I am writing retroactively and I am absolutely exhausted. Andy is sleeping in the chair in front of me and Eric is reading next to me. We have all taken off our shoes after 18 hours of hiking in two days, and luckily the train employees haven’t kicked us off yet. Our feet smell fantastic.
We arrived in Cusco after a 20 hour bus that was actually 23 hours. We also arrived no less than 5 minutes after the South ...
4 days ago a group of 5 people plus a guide, 5 porters and a cook set off to master the famous Inka Trail. The first day was relatively easy with most of the 12 km being more or less flat, so we could get used to the walking and carrying our backpacks (unlike most people we didnt hire a porter and carried all our stuff (about 10-12 kg) ourselves). When we got to our lunchspot the porters, who are just amazing and run up the mountains with about 25kg each ...
Machu Picchu, Cusco, Peru jeffandlisa... mountain overlooking the site, if we wanted to. But warned us that it was very steep and that we had to get back to Aguas Calientes in time for lunch and our train back to Ollantaytambo. I, Marcel, Daniela, Brenda and Cris decided to climb Huayna Picchu (which means “Young Peak” in Quechua – Machu Picchu means “Old Peak”). The others stayed behind in Machu Picchu. We arrived at the registration booth at the ...
