So, it begins again. The long-ass flights, the not knowing what time it is. . . or caring. Boston to O'Hare--I got there at 7:50 in the morning. Luckily, in Chicago, they serve booze that early, so I got a Bloody Mary and some eggs and sausage at a Wolfgang Puck operation--cost me 25 dollars. Actually, now that the airlines are charging for. . . …

Wow!!!!!!!! So I'm FINALLY here after what feels like some very long travels! The flight to LA was soooo amazing, flew over greenland and saw loads of ice caps (thought we were flying over the north pole and going the wrong way, bu then the person next to me showed me how to follow where we were going on the interactive sat nav on the tv screen) …

Red legs and kissing crabs...

A travel blog entry by alohasofia

God, what an awesome day so far....

I sunbathed on the beach all day, the sea is so blue and gorgeous and swam lots. Got very burnt legs! Ran into one of my room mates who made a spear out of a palm tree and we went snorkeling on the reef. He caught a crab and I gave it a kiss coz it was cute, it had funny little eyes. I think if it could …

    Friendly

The kicker were the other travellers, they were awesome fun! The staff were friendly or accommodating or both, depending on who you spoke to (the male staff seemed to be the most enjoyable to speak to about different events etc). The 8-bedroom dorm had its own kitchen and bathroom and were cleaned daily. The common area was pretty basic but enjoyable.

    Great Fun

    from anonymous

Great place to stay. Staff is very outgoing and friendly. They took us out to show us around. Had lots of fun. A staff member even gave us free surfing lessons! Way to go guys! Wouldn't stay anyplace else.

Definitely not on my top 100 hostel list!

Over the years I have stayed in a lot of hostels in many countries. I found this place to be completely substandard. Places in impoverished countries beat the cleanliness of this place. The hostel has a lot of people living there and they don't seem to take a lot of pride in where they live. The management staff didn't really have much to offer in terms of what they are supposed to do. People seemed more interested in partying - which is okay to some degree. The problem is that there is not really a common area in which to hang out, so the residents hang out in the outdoor hallways. I stayed in a 4-person room (the "Hilton" side of the hostel). I found it to be very messy and feel that this was due to the fact that I was placed in a room with people who were residents and very settled in. Their stuff was everywhere! In proper hostels, people generally are respectful of their own personal space and stick to using it for storage of goods. I did not feel secure in leaving my belongings in the room as the residents in my room kept leaving the bloomin' door open so that they could socialize with friends on the "shanty town" side of the hostel. There were no lockers in which to store my belongings (e.g. passport, flight ticket). I think that I have made my point. Little to offer and I won't do it again despite the 25$ price. People would be better off to stay in an Internationally approved youth hostel.

my boyfriend and i had never stayed in a hostel before and thought it would be really cool to share rooms with other travelers in Hawaii. When we arrrived we were very disgusted with what we saw. Our roomates were actually living in the hostel and were very messy. My boyfriend and I shared a semiprivate room and we couldn't even get the double bed we had booked so we had to push two twin beds together and sleep (how romantic). Our sliding glass door didn't even lock b/c it was broken. The bathrooms were horrible. I couldn't even bare to touch the walls when showering. The air conditioning in our room barely worked, our blankets were old and torn, the curtains were falling apart , and the room was not stocked with the proper dishes and silverware like we were expecting. Also we were not informed that we had to bring our own bath towels. The pictures of the hostel on the internet certainly did not reflect the actual rooms. It needs to be updated!!! On the bright side certain staff members were very friendly and helpful but i definantly would not recommend this place to anybody. The only good things i can say is the internet room was very useful and the hostel was very close to the beach. Nevertheless our room did not hold us back from having a great time in Hawaii!! We just stayed out as much as possible!

    Gross

My sister booked this hostel so we had somewhere to stay while in Honolulu on the day of our arrival. Once we got upstairs to our room it smelt, there were cockroachs and the bathroom was disgusting. There was actually someone in the room, whom obviously hadnt payed their money because there were notes stuck to the front of our door saying that the water to our room will be turned off at 2pm that day and that locks will be changed ... (not a pleasant welcoming to Honolulu) I stayed out untill 9:30 that night finding a decent place to stay, and left this hostel at 9:35.. they could keep their $25 and the cockroaches. On our way out, the man that was actually staying in our room was asking everyone for money...when approached i couldnt help but laugh then walk away...as im sure if he hadnt spent all his money on beer he would be unable to pay is rent ... how do i know this .. the floor of this particular room in the hostel where we were allocated was overflowing with empty beer bottles ... classy!

Maybe a room check before booking people in... Im sure the other people in the hostel we great and nice people but i didnt stick around long enough to find out! The people at the front desk actually admitted to us that the hostel was NOTHING like the internet site on our departure ... bad move guys!

Nice prices, excellent location, really friendly and warm people staying here, not to clean and did have some problem with bedbugs, the semi-private room much better, I'll go back!

    So much fun

    from anonymous

i had never stayed at a hostel before, so this was my first time.

i found it to be so much fun, i stayed in a 4 bedroom room, the rooms have hot showers, your own TV, stove and kitchen.I got there at midnight and because there is no curfew which is great i went out, you can come and go as you please.

There is a huge big screen TV in the common area down stairs, with lounges, tables and chairs.

the hostels in 1 minute walk from the beach, which is great and like 3 minutes walk from the clubs.

Just around the corner there is a convenient store which sells everything. The hostel has an internet cafe, and storage lockers.

when i was there, there was a lot of young people but me also being young i had a great time.

do it stay at the waikiki beachside hostel, it's an unbelievable goodtime.

    Nice place

    from anonymous

really nice place! the staff were the coolest and the facilities were great. huge TV, free breakfast, surf board rentals, good looking staff, and an overall positive place to hang around in. the people are brilliant met people from all over the world and would love to go back if i had the chance. the beach is only 5 minutes from your doorstep and the car rental place in next door. i do recommend goin in the rooms with single beds aposed to bunks though.

    All right

    from anonymous

I stayed there with my family in the last of the private rooms. Although now there is only facilities for semi private and dorm accommodation. Overall it wasn't too bad, it got a bit noisy, but after speaking to management they tried to quiet down (partly successful). The cleanliness of the rooms could be of a higher standard (basically - empty your bin - and give the floor a quick wipe with a wet mop), but quite ok it your not too fussy. The staff were OK, polite but needed a bit of prompting if you were after something. Of course, they have free local phonecalls and cheap parking for your vehicle - so that's a bonus. It located close to the beach so if you are not too concerned about the issues I've raised, its a suitable budget place.

    It is alright

    from chong

    I stayed in the hostel on 16th - 19th May 2004.

4 person dorm was okay. (USD25 per day)

    the floor was clean.

bathroom was alright if your are easy to satisfied.

the bed got no bugs. bedsheets were clean.

kitchen was a bit dirty as my roommates cooked frequently but did not wash the dishes immediately.

one of my roommates often did not close the door tightly (card lock type door) - that made me feeling a bit insecured, when i was sleeping.

    reception was friendly.

i did not need airport pick-up shuttle, so i don't know if it is good or not.

But the reception staff helped me book shuttle bus to the airport one day in advance, when i check-out, that's nice! (fee:USD1)

shuttle to the airport costs USD6, only one bus per hour (e.g. 8:40am, 9:40am, 10:40am...)

there was a phone in a 4 ppl dorm.
