... lit up, visibility actually improved as the clouds lifted.

So, back to the beginning of the day... Already about five hours late, we approached a very eery-looking New York with several container ships slowly materialising through the mist ahead of us. We were virtually under the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge by the time we saw it.

... so had to run back to the flat to get them before it started which was a little stressful. The stadium was packed that night creating a great atmosphere. The Rangers stormed to victory 4-0 which meant that we got to sing the celebratory "Goal" song several times which we loved.

... from Bristol but went quite quickly and before we knew it, we were in uptown close to the Hertz Garage and we hadn't filled the car up with fuel to return it...... We got in the Hertz garage and they charged us $9+ a gallon for the remaining tank of fuel!! I complained about the service we had received when we picked the vehicle up and that they hadn't given us the option to pre pay for the fuel at $3+ per gallon, so they only charged us $70+ for the remaining tank of fuel ...

... and would have made a nice stop but we stayed on the bus til Chinatown which turned out to be a mistake as the area was a bit grubby. Little Italy was so small we missed it! Having got off the bus we decided to enjoy a walk to the 9/11 Memorial which was very sobering and poignant. It's amazing that the scars have healed at least in physical terms. In Times Square our bus guide pointed out a Fire Department Station House where every single fireman met ...

So after an efficient flight from Tampa, we were welcomed by a reasonably functional subway system (not as good as the London Underground, but am discovering nowhere is) and rocketed into midtown NYC on Manhattan Island.

We touched base at our accommodation in Upper Manhattan and our first experience of Air BnB which in retrospect was extremely positive, but no hanging around, straight back into the heart of NYC.

Straight to 34th Street where we 'shot' up ...
