Vancouver.. our new home!

After two boring days on the Amtrak train we finally made it to our new home! I forgot to mention that every Amtrak train they we have caught up to this point has had at least 2 powerpoints next to every seat... until we got the oldest train out of them all that had NONE. Makes for a boring train trip when your laptop only lasts a few hours. We had to catch a Amtrak bus from Seattle to Vancouver as the train didn't go that way. We were on with a group of oldies that had been doing America by ...

Arrived in Vancouver

Well we made it!! Unfortunately we didn't get an upgrade to business class (the flight was very full and we were lucky just to get on the plane) but the flight was pretty good otherwise. Arrived at our Hostel at about 3pm (local time) and went out exploring for a bit. Then came back and got 2 hours sleep before we went to Denny's (just around the corner) for dinner. Tomorrow we have a pass for a hop on hop off bus service which will take us around Vancouver to see all the sights. Both of our ...

a touch of sport

A 3 hour ferry ride and my cousin Lesley and i arrived at Duke Point, Vancouver, where we were picked up and taken home, home being in Tsawwassen. I spent 3 nights there with her husband Ward, 3 children, Mark, Emelie and Curtis and Oliver the dog. I spent the friday walking the beach, it was still warm enough to do some sunbathing, after finally getting my tan back in Qualicum i dont want to lose it this close to home, lol. On Saturday i went to watch Mark play Soccer, i now fully understand...

Vancouver!

Ooooooh, Vancouver! Who knew you could fall entirely in love with a place in just a few hours? After checking into our hostel - HI Vancouver Downtown (not too shabby!) - we set out on foot to explore the city, only to discover that the hostel was just one block off Davie Street, the city's primary gay drag. We felt like we'd won the gay lottery! Since it was the day before Vancouver Gay Pride, the neighborhood was positively overrun with gay men, lesbians, and everything in between, rainbow f...

2862 Kilometres later!!!!

After our final train journey - overnight from Kamloops to Vancouver - we have made it across the entire width of Canada, 2862 Km's is a long way!!!! Although the train is an ideal way to see the country it can at times be painfully slow (but if they need to make up time they can do - racing down the tracks late at night!!!). So we have been from East to West through cityscapes, across the Canadian Shield, through Prairie lands, seeing countless trees, stunning mountain vistas and then to Pac...

Whale Watching (or not)

On Thursday I got all dressed up in warm clothes - leggings, pants, shortsleeve thermal top, longsleeve thermal top, fleece and jacket, beanie, gloves (learnt my lesson from the bear watching experience) and walked down to the inner harbour to go whale watching. It was a warm day so I got a bit hot on the walk and standing around waiting to board. Anyway, we got on the boat and off we went out to sea. Only problem was that a fog had rolled in about an hour before and it was so thick that we c...

Vancouver - the final Canadian Frontier

My last uber-train journey in Canada ended up in Vancouver. I have never been so glad to get off a train in my life. So very glad that I decided to fly to San Francisco instead of the 22 hour train ride I was planning. I will return and see Oregon one day, but on this trip I will be viewing it from about. After hauling my backpack across the city I had to wait for a couple of hours to check in - booo. But as I was sitting in the lobby in walks Martin from Winnipeg. So it was nice to see a fri...

Vancouver Downtown

Today is my fourth day in Canada and I've now had a bit of time to explore and find my way around Vancouver. The cloudy weather has dissapeared to reveal the beautiful snow-capped mountains to the north of city. Every time I catch a sight of them between the buildings I get pretty excited that I'm actually here! The air is so clean and fresh here, even in the city it's really pleasant just to wander the streets for most of the day. It's been a fairly quiet few days, given that it's Easter we...

Vancouver Aquarium

The weather hasn't been fantastic overall, so last weekend we opted for some indoor entertainment. We went to Vancouver Aquarum located in the very large and very green Stanley Park, a short walk from Downtown. On Sunday evening we went to the cinema to watch 10,000BC in one of the city's impressive movie theatres. It was pretty surreal...the place was clean and the staff were actually smiling?! Sorry this is a pretty short entry, just an excuse to upload some photos! I'm currently on Vancouv...
