I spent my first day roaming around a pretty small section of Hanoi.

The city is pretty easy to navigate if you don't get run over crossing the street, or fall into an open utility well, or trip on the rubble that used to be a sidewalk. Truly a third world feel here. You throw your life or at least physical well being to the winds of fate …

It was surprisingly easy to get into the country. From all I heard, your Visa had to match your travel dates exactly. But at the airport I pretty much breezed through the immigration gauntlet. Hopped the bus for a $1.50 into the city, cheap given it was about an hour's drive. This part of the world is much greener than the rest of the places I have …

So I arrived in Hanoi yesterday. First impressions were interesting, I managed to get a taxi for 40,000 Dong ($2) negotiated down to local price after I'd already agreed $4. After I got dropped off a bloke on the minibus very conveniently had a scooter waiting so for another dollar I was dropped at my Hostel. Jokes on them, $3USD is nothing to a …

We traveled for 12 hrs in a sleeper bus from Hue to Hanoi with almost no sleep because of very bad roads – often times I felt that I am flying. We got to Hanoi at 6 am and got a quick shower at the backpacker's hotel (great, fun place) and had breakfast in our favorite Joma Café. Then a 1 hr taxi to airport followed by a 2 hr flight to …

On the early morning, we (Japanese guy and I) arrived Hanoi. The railway station was too far away from the downtown. Got the help from a chinese girl who speaks Vietnamese, we finally arrived Hoan Kim Lake by local bus. The hostel I wanted to stay is near to Hoan Kim Lake.

I gotta say it was a great hostel though I couldn't sleep every …

Awesome hostel, probably one of the best I stayed so far all over SE Asia. Service, rooms and staff are great and very helpful and it's all super clean. The only thing to mention: if you don't want to stay at a party place, head somewhere else, as the lobby is changing into a crazy bar every night and if you stay at the lower levels, you will not catch any sleep before 11:30 pm. ;-)

We stayed at the Ma May downtown backpackers hostel. This hostel has a really good atmosphere. Helpful staff on reception that can help you with planning trips and gave us good travel advice. Food served is very sufficient western food and drinks very cheap (especially at happy hour) at the bar. There is also a chill out room with computers with Internet access as well. We had a private room in the hostel which was fairly big and very clean but people we spoke to who stayed in dorms said they were good as well. Would definitely recommend to any backpackers staying in Hanoi!!

Really Clean. Well organised. Those Aussies have done a pretty good job of it all. Can be a little noisy at times when your not in the mood for it, but just need to harden up.

The tours organized by the hostel are priced reasonably but sometimes aren't organized very well.

It was a great place to stay!
We stayed at their Ma May hostel, which is new, and it was really cool!
The rooms were good and the BF was simple but ok. The lounge is great and the staff was rather nice, though we had a problem with a timetable mix up. I recommend you to always check the tour arrival times directly with the tour guide.
But even then, they were quite helpful in resolving the situation!
We just glaced at the old hostel but it look quite nice and cosy. it's a little more central too.

I actually stayed in the new hostel of the Hanoi Backpackers chain, on Ma May street, and it's the best hostel I've ever stayed in.
Dorms are great, with lockers and even a little locker above ur bed to leave ur phone to charge! Super clean bathrooms and dorms. Massive rooftop "hangin out room" with sofas, plasma screen, pool table, internet, and a roof terrace. Awesome staff, and every evening is a new occasion to drink downstairs with ur fellow travellers :-) Plus, they organise the best tours around (do NOT miss their Halong Bay tour!).

This is by far your best option when it comes to staying in Hanoi. You will plan to stay for one night, and end up staying for a week. It has a great vibe, with a lively bar and restaurant down stairs. The dorms are clean, air-conditioned, and have fast WiFi. Dorms start from $6 a night ($9 for a double bed). I highly recommend booking yourself onto the Rocking boat tour around Ha Long Bay, this booze filled trip is by far one of the best things I have done on my trip

Stayed at the new location on Ma may Street (not the one listed above here). 200 or so beds, impecably managed, clean and friendly. Great location. Always a party downstairs, yet rooms are quiet, so you can get away from the crowd that feels a bit 'spring break-y' if you want. They help you book all kinds of tours. WIFI does not reach in all rooms. There are dozens of free computers, which is amazing IF they work, which often they did not. Would always seek out this place if it exists in other cities (like it does in Hue for instance).

I didn't really care for this place at all. Hue Backpackers (same chain) was amazing and I would definitely revisit it. Hanoi Backpackers... well maybe it was just a bad week for them but I had bed bugs and stayed up a good part of the night with a reoccurring fist fight between two Europeans. Not the most desirable way to spend the night of Christmas Day.
