Super friendly and efficient staff, all the mod cons you could wish for. Hostel is completely used to dealing with traveller's needs and were very accommodating. Our room was a bit small but clean with hot showers and quick wifi.

Probably the best hostel I've stayed in. Brilliant staff and in a excellent location walking distance away from the underground. The dorms rooms itself are very clean and tidy with your own locker area. The roof terrace had amazing views over the city. Also the lounge area is amazing with free internet, big TV and a pool table. You get a lovely breakfast included in the price which is so much better than all the other breakfast Ive had included around the world. Its not just toast and cereal!

If i had to say one thing I didn't like is that people hog the computers, it should be a half an hour slot so everyone could use them and book there next destination.

But apart from that I would recommend it to anyone

Nice but not a budget hotel

    from

stayed 3 nights in this little nice hotel. it's located on a hill but walkable distance to mrt stations "little india" & "dhoby ghaut". room is clean & tidy, staff are very helpful, strict security, with a nice restaurant, lounges on 2/F (can access internet) & the roof. but the rate is a bit high, u can find some cheap places located in centre at a budget rate.

Nice cafe and garden, spartan room

    from

I stayed at Hangout@Emily in 2005. Perched on a quiet hill, Hangout sits amongst quiet rows of pre-war shophouses and some low-rise residences. Cold Storage supermarket is about 10 mins walk away and the nearest MRT station (Dhoby Ghaut) 15 mins walk. As Singapore is warm and humid, such walks in the afternoon are not recommended. The lobby is designed in youthful and quirky colours, staff are friendly except the big security man who visits the communal computer cum TV cum billiard room...he behaves like a army staff sergeant or school disciplinary master. The rooftop garden is also simple and yet has a certain Balinese feel...with a small pond and deck areas for sunbathing. The cafe area (next to lobby) is very white and gives the feeling that you could be somewhere in a clean Swiss motel.

The single room is simple but clean and quiet. No TV, no refrigerator. Just a bed, bedside table and toilet. The blinds also do not shield out the light sufficiently and I am often woken up by the bright morning light.

I took the shared room for a night just for the experience. The room has a stench, like evaporated sweat. There is little room to store your belongings and you will have to drag your things out to the lit corridor to pack in the night for fear to disturbing the others and also to get enough light!

But you get to meet lots of young, cute guys and gals!

Good value considering prices in Singapore

    from

We stayed at Mt Emily for two nights and found it to be more than adequate.

Accomodation in Singapore isn't cheap so it is nice to find somewhere that doesnt break the bank. Consequently it is simple but then again you dont book somewhere like this if you want in-room DVD players and a spa, do you?

Whilst it's a little further away from the centre than most accomodation we found it still to be walkable to most places so isnt inconvenient!

    Decent, but wouldn't stay again

    from

This hotel isn't cheap for a budget hotel, but with the amenities offered it's reasonable enough. The lobby is nice, and the communal areas pretty well maintained, it's also kept remarkably clean. Rooms are a decent size, with a standard en suite bathroom and security is tight with the requirement of card keys to access each floor. The only problem I had with this place was the odd smell - it permeated throughout the building, even with the communal areas on the upper floors. Didn't get round to complaining to the management as I was hardly in the hotel in the first place, but it would definitely stop me from staying there again, or recommending this place to anyone.

A great review from a singaporean

    from

I went to the Hangout hotel @ Mount Emily with my gf to celebrate her birthday, we took a cab there at first, and the cab driver didn't quite know the place, anyway if you are going there by a cab, just tell the driver, Mount Emily, and he will drive you up to the hill and its just up there at the end of the road next to a grand bungalow house.

From the outside, the building looks nothing fantastic, a brown tone corporate-like structure, but once you get inside, the friendly front desk counter staff awaits you with a great smile that you can't find in any of the hotels in singapore. I have stayed in the other hotels in singapore, and nothing gives me such personalised and wonderful experience and attention from the hotel staff! I could say that their service were No. 1!

So much for the service, the facilities there were not bad, they have a "WASH OUT" area where you can wash your laundry in the automated washing machine if i am not wrong (cos i nvr been there). I like the way they name their facilities, it make it sound so interesting and cool, like "Pig out", a place where you can eat, "Zonk out", the comfy rooms, "Call out", the telephone services, "Help out", the friendly service counter, and others.

We checked in a double bed room, and the room was quite tidy and looked as real as from the photos stated in their website. Finally, one that lives up to their reputation! Enough of all those bogus photos that you see online, and disappoints you when you finally see them. It's very simple and their room design seems to be inspired by IKEA. But too bad there wasnt any TV or radio, to the hangout management: please install a TV or a cheap radio! Even the budget Hotel 81 has a LCD TV..

The bed was comfortable, with clean sheets and etc. To my surprise, they even have a bathtub! I didn't expect that.

To sum up, a hotel with no frills, excellent service, room with nice view, and comfortable bed.

Will visit it again, thanks Hangout for giving my gf such a memorable birthday experience!

    Alright, but not the best.

    from

My partner and i stayed for just one night from June 19 - June 20. And yes, it's true that the place looks just like the pictures in their website. But this can only be said for the exterior of the hotel, not the rooms.

The hotel had very nice design for their lobby and reception area. They had "pool side" tables and chairs just out side the main entrance for people to hang out and smoke. It's a nice place for smokers to relax. And there is even a small japanese style kind of fountain with bamboo plants growing behind the fountain. I must say that the landscaping of the hotel is very good in order to achieve their theme. The roof top (7th floor) has an interesting concept. They even had lazy chairs for people to sun tan. The tanning chairs does give the roof a relaxing laid-back kind of look. But seriously, i don't think anyone would wanna sun tan on the roof. But the balinese theme does provide the soothing effect and a good view of the surrounding vicinity.

The hotel boast alot about their chill out lounge, internet rooms, and their in-house movies lounge. I thought it was one of their main attractions only to find that they were all in the same room. It was just this big room where they place a pool table in the middle, a few PCs at the corner, and a TV with a few cusions around it. Not as must a hype as they made it to be. But then again, this is no 5-star hotel.

The rooms were probably the least comfortable place to be in the hotel. It was rather small. The queen size bed took up almost the whole room leaving just enough walking space to get from the door to the toilet. I can't exactly say that the pictures on their website is deceiving because the room really does look like the pictures in terms of it's furnishing. But the photographs are taken from one angle and doesn't show the real size of the room. The hang out area is more comfortable than the room in fact.

The only other draw back was the at the check-out time is 10am, which was surprising becuase most hotels have it at 12pm. We requested a late check-out but was only given till 11am. This was first time i stayed in a budget hotel. And all in all, the experience was alright.

    Best Budget Accomodation indeed!

    from

Rarely have I seen a place that ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE THE PICTURES in their website! I took some pictures of the place during my stay from March 31-April 2, 2006, and you'll notice not much difference between the pictures I took and the ones in their website. I totally enjoyed every bit of my stay there and wish I could've stayed longer.

Of course I had to lower my expectations. This was my first time to stay in a hostel. I usually stay at the bigger, more reliable brand hotels, but since I was traveling on impulse this time, I felt I needed to travel within a certain budget. I truly was a bit apprehensive as I've stayed in a 3-star Singapore hotel 2 years ago and had a terrible time, so the thought of staying somewhere cheaper scared me. But good thing I was guided by the good people from the Singapore forums and found HANGOUT@MT. EMILY. What I paid for (2) two nights there is just a few dollars more than what a 3star hotel would have charged for one night! My room at Hangout was clean and cool, and still smelled new actually - to think the room I got had no windows (they only have two kinds of private rooms, either with a window without TV, or with TV without windows). As written on the brochures and in their website, NO FRILLS, JUST FUN. All the basics are there - clean linen, hot shower and bath (no toiletries except for the liquid soap dispenser, just bath towels and no hand and face towels), airconditioning, no mini ref and coffee/tea making facilities, and non of the clutter of brochures, hotel directory, or the usual complimentary pen and paper. They hand you a small Hangout A to Z flyer upon check in, together with your key card that you will need to access other facilities from the 2nd floor up, other than your room (which is a very good security measure). But from what I've seen and experienced, they make sure you are comfortable, you feel safe, and also, they may be a no frills hostel but they do have STYLE! And its something that you'll get to appreciate. Its somewhat homey too, with areas looking like pages from a simple IKEA catalogue.

The front desk was efficiently manned by only one hotel staff at a time functioning as cashier, reception and concierge! And all four persons Ive encountered who manned the counter during the duration of my stay were all helpful, friendly and very, very efficient.

The quiet and bright restaurant serves simple and adequate breakfast which was included with my room charge. At night however, it transforms into a romantic, fine restaurant, Wild Rocket, which though bit on the expensive side, I enjoyed two excellent dinners during my two nights stay. For both nights, the restaurant was packed. Approaching the hotel in the cab, I was surprised to see a lot of expensive cars parked outside. I guess the restaurant is popular among locals. I didn't notice other in house guests on both nights eating at the restaurant. Understandably, since you can get a lot of cheaper local flavour outside. However, I was drawn to the atmosphere and I had a real good meal - the qualiy of which is comparable to higher end hotels.

Aside from the hotel and the atmosphere, what I liked most about the hotel is the location. Although I managed to walk from the hotel up to the Esplanade passing by the cathay, kopitiam in bencoolen, then to chimes, raffles city, citilink to suntec and marina square, I didnt dare to walk back to the hotel. It is located on a slope, so after a tiring day, it would be a punishment to walk back up. It is not on a main street and you have to walk further down to the main street and flag one down. But dont fear, it is easy to call a taxi from the hotel if you dont wish to walk, with a surcharge though. Walking to the nearest MRT was also suggested to me, though I just wanted to see more of the city in less travel time. What I like about the place is that its in a really quiet part of the city. The hotel is in an elevated area which others may consider a disadvantage but it has its advantages. It is peaceful there! And if you want an early morning jog, you will love the place. The hotel is surrounded by trees, with Mt. Emily Park within the vicinity. I noticed there's a school nearby, so I can't say if it can be noisy there at times. But during my stay, it was really clean and peaceful and you'll enjoy the breeze and fresh air since you're definitely far from the traffic and the crowds. There are impressive houses and several residential buildings around. There are several table and chairs just outside the entrance where one can smoke or enjoy the fresh air and the peace and quiet with a cup of coffee (which you can get free from the 2nd floor lounge - all day!). Spent quiet time there early saturday morning watching two squirrels playing around the trees. Also used the 24 hour free internet access on the 2nd floor. There's a nice rooftop area also with a standing pool (not a swimming pool) and sunbeds, and more areas to relax and enjoy the view.

I really thought about writing a review or not. Writing a good review might invite other budget travelers to try Hangout and would mean it could be difficult to book a room there in the future. But I would also want others to experience this true, no frills hotel. For budget travellers, its heaven. For regular travellers, its a safe, basic accomodation with money well spent. Not for picky, demanding travellers (well if you are picky and demanding that means you wont even consider staying in a budget hotel). And by the way, they were just awarded Best Accomodation (Budget category) for the year.

Oh, and you wont get annoyed with the usual huge, noisy tour groups which is a usual sight at the bigger hotels! I encountered mostly young americans, canadians, europeans during my stay. Though looking far from the typical stereotype backpackers, the Hangout guests I guess got the vibe of the hotel. Everyone was friendly and there were smiles everywhere. Not much noise during my stay, just fun groups planning their Singapore adventure as they browsed through the brochures in the lobby. Everyone seem to just enjoy their stay and respected other travellers. Although I travelled alone, I'm sure its a nice hotel choice to go to when travelling with friends.

Hangout@Mt. Emily exceeded my expectations. Would definitely stay there again. As stated in their brochure, it is "Singapore's Best Kept Secret". I know it wouldn't stay as such for long, however I do hope they'd keep up with the demand in the future.
