Andrew woke with another bad hangover as he'd been up drinking in to the wee hours with some guys from Nottingham and subsequently having another night with hardly any sleep he didn't feel the best. We missed the breakfast, to Andrew's horror, but the trip came with a free lunch so I told him it wouldn't be too long to wait. We met up with our …
A little bit of luxury
After the train trip in upright seats through the night and therefore without any real sleep we waited around at the train station for the free pick up to depart and got chatting to Rorie and Emer and hit it off straight away. They were Irish and therefore probably liked to drink and have a bit of craic. They were doing a round the world trip in …
Soft Sleeper - How the other half live
We hit the jackpot with our journey from Beijing to Xian, not only had we managed to secure Soft Sleeper Class beds, but we had the cabin to ourselves for the entire journey. After the Hard Seat experience the week before we really appreciated travelling in comparative luxury. As we were settling ourselves in for the twelve hour, 1300km journey, …
R & R Before train to Chengdu
Xian is one of the oldest cities in China, home to the Terracotta Army, and by far the most enjoyable place that we have visited so far in China. Having visited the Terracotta Army we decided to stay put for a few days and have a break from constant sightseeing. One day the sun even managed to break through the constant smog that we've had pretty …

Is this the way to Amarillo...I mean Xi'an?
Whoever said a lot of people speak English in China clearly didn't try to find them in the bazillions of people that roam China. The words needle and haystack come to mind.
We hadn't realised but apparently we were traveling on a Chinese national holiday and because of this the HUGE …

As a more mature travelling couple we opted for the private ensuite room which was clean and comfortable. The location is excellent as are the staff. The day trip to see the terracotta army was good value if a little rushed. Food and drink in the hostel was also good value. The atmosphere was lively and we enjoyed the dumpling party. Our only minor gripes are that the bathroom suffers from poor drainage resulting in a paddling pool after having a shower. The room would also benefit from having a kettle to make tea/coffee and one of our towels was really beyond use with a large hole in the middle! Other than that, we rate this hostel very highly
