As soon as we arrived at Albina in Suriname via bus and ferry at the unearthly time of 7.30 am, we were in trouble in that they would not let us into the country. Having been up since 2.30 am this did not go down well with me and I started arguing. It was very satisfying to be able to do it in Dutch. The problem? Our visas started from 7th November, which we thought we had specified as the date we intended to leave the country. Unfortunately we had not noticed this before....
Well... Up at 4:00am to get a minibus to the ferry to Suriname (There is only 1 a day and it leaves at 10am)
Finally got to Paramaribo at about 4ish and checked into this lovely guest house (I even had Air con in the room!!!!!) The Manager was a nice bloke and I had had 4 beers before I actually found Room! Then there where a few more in the night!
... great delicacy and the thought of that tasty meat made him quite forget he was supposed to prevent hunting in the forest!

The next day we broke camp and headed back downriver. It was now the weekend, and we saw quite a few boats heading the other way with parties of fishermen, and realised that, though the park is uninhabited it's certainly well visited; it seemed like half the Javanese of Paramaribo had turned up with ice boxes, initially full ...

And then there was Chris, an extrovert German guy, who travels at least ten weeks every year, and Dominik from Switzerland who had one month left of his seven in middle and south America. Puts our trip in perspective!

Peter's Haiku:
Red trees, dust like fog
Mist rises from warm river
Rain falls like bullets
Paramaribo, Suriname els_and_peter... single one, but of all. Still Dutch is the language of government, education and commerce, and educated native-born Guyanese, many of whom have been to the Netherlands, will speak it amongst themselves. The big linguistic surprise in Suriname is that touts and hawkers will bark at me in Dutch and not English. This is especially surprising considering that English is widely studied and known, though outside of the rather small 'tourist zone' not ...
Paramaribo, Suriname hardiek... were offloaded with our luggage, which we then had to to keep with us until getting in the minibus on the other side. Nobody actually told me that the bus did not get on the ferry, I had to work it out for myself. First we queued with passports for a ferry ticket, payable in Euros, USD, SRD or Guyanese dollars. I paid SRD$38 for a single journey. That is about $13 USD. The clerk writes the ticket details by hand then puts it in a pile, with passport, for ...

Domburg, Suriname sylviaenjeroen... back home about it. My desire to join the Peace Corps goes back a long time. My mom tells me that as a kid I'd get excited when the commercials came on TV. In high school I remember looking through the Peace Corps brochures and telling myself that it was what I was going to do after college. Sure enough, six months after graduating I found myself on a plane from Detroit headed to a country most Americans know very little about, wondering what I was getting myself into ...
Paramaribo, Suriname finefine... so hard to keep things together and make something for themselves. He was able to borrow a boat motor from a neighbour. We left at dawn on Monday and had a beautiful ride back to Albina on a very calm sea (like glass really) We say dolphins in the water and a monkey in a tree. Now, I am into a bit of a scramble to get things wrapped up in these last 3 days. It hardly seems real that I am heading home early Friday morning and in a few days can sit in my kitchen with a cup of ...
Parimaribo, Suriname mary_in_surinam... the highest suicide rate in Suriname. Little is done by the authorities to stem child abuse and family violence in this community. I was facilitating a group of service organizations that want to form a networking group to try to make changes in their community. I am saddened by the enormity of their task in a country where civil society is a thin veneer that exists in regulations that few are accountable for. I'm tired today and blaming it on too much ...
Parimaribo, Suriname mary_in_surinam... organization is a most impressive woman and in our (Brenda and my) opinion has the best run ASO in Suriname. The staff at Maxi Linder are an enthusiastic bunch and the energy is great. The Diplomatic Ladies Bazarre Friday evening we were real Canadians. We were invited to help at the annual diplomatic ladies fund raising bazarre. We served Canadian beer and ice cream. We all laughed at the ice cream set up. They had coolers with tubs of frozen cream but no ice! Anton ...
