Puntari osoitti ...

I Found Nemo

... out and to find Nemo out in the wild like that blew me away. These weren't that goldfish size **** at the petstore either...they were restaurant size quality and unlike the other fish, didn't swim around. A local woman told me clownfish stay in pairs and don't move so they can protect their young. I tried to get some pics of Nemo but the waves kept ruining the shot. Plus the clownfish don't hover around the surface like everyone else. In any case, if ...

Sabah: Road Tripping in Eastern Malaysia

... 8220;the RUNGUS Longhouse”, with plenty of rolled R’s and extravagant pronunciation. By the time we arrived in Kota Kinabalu, I’d lost count of how many time Ian had asked taxi drivers, hotel concierges, waiters, and just about anyone else whose ear he could bend about the Rungus Longhouse. Like I said, I think he just enjoyed saying “Rungus”. Set ...

1st days in KK and climbing Mt Kinabalu

... asking people for directions, i think he was just a really bad taxi driver! The place he dropped me off at turned out to be really cool anyway so i didn't mind. On my first day i found it a bit strange being on my own but quite cool in a way, not having to wait hours for Banj to get ready and listen to Tileys bad jokes is one of the positives. Kota Kinabalu seems like a cool town but theres not a lot to see really. I walked around the harbour for a while and checked out the local ...

... out complete, we got lucky and were able to flag a mini-bus right away, which made the journey back much quicker than a larger coach. (and probably less smelly too). so here we are, in the airport, killing time before our plane. excited to see licia, get some western-meets-eastern culture, hawker centre food, and leora is excited for some yoga (which we found courtesy of the lonely planet).

... souvenirs that can be found. The goods here ranged from fresh produce, to hardware supplies, clothing and even pets (on top of the tourist souvenirs). We didn't find anything to be much of a bargain, but the prices were about as good as it gets in Kota Kinabalu. We decided to hold off on the tourist souvenirs until we were in Kuching, but still bought a large bag of peanuts for only 5 RM. This market starts quite early in the day and people were starting to pack up shortly after noon.

... and it took a bit of work to find an operator that could get us permits. We only got a place on the mountain due to a cancellation. Hence we only decided on Sunday to book our river tour for the following day. This gave us the excuse to fly instead of taking a bus (so much for getting back to real backpacking in Borneo). We have found that flying around Malaysia on Air Asia is a good cheap way to get around. It is only slightly more expensive than the busses.

... all part of the fun. Brunei I thought the streets would be paved with gold; they weren't. I arrived early afternoon and by the evening, I'd seen everything I'd wanted to. The bus journey up from the west of the country had revealed how Brunei had made it onto the world map; oil. For about an hour I passed row upon row of nodding-donkeys (land based oil pumps), that's a lot of crude. There were even pumps dotted along the greens of the golf-courses ...
