New Zealand

North Island Emirates; by far the best airline I have flown. Luxurious deep fill seats with fantastic legroom, a choice of hundreds of movies on your own personal entertainment station, and great food and wine with real stainless steel cutlery. And this was standard Economy Class! Believe the hype. Landing in Auckland was a shock to the system, it was chilly compared to my last 10 months! Fleeces on, Ebony and I headed for the Central Business District (CBD) where we'd booked a hotel for the ...

Getting away from the stink!

Today I was up early again and popped over the road to have a look at some of the geothermal pools and spas before checking out at 10am. It's hard to get a lift in town, so I stared the 4km walk to the outskirts to try and find my way to Taupo. I met a couple of german girls on the way and chatted away before putting them in a car and continuing myself to try and find a lift. A retired greengrocer stopped and offered me a lift some of the way, he had business in Murupara but would take me to ...

Conquering Doom on the Tongariro Crossing

Today I conquered Mount Doom. The weather was perfect, and we did the Tongariro Crossing, the "best one day hike in New Zealand" and one of the "best 10 one day hikes in the world." I'll continue to put those overblown statements in quotations, but I will say, I am quite impressed! So we got up early again this morning. I was very anxious. I really did not want to have the bus driver come in at 6:20 again and tell us it had been called off. That would have been terrible. But the bus didn't sh...

No more flights!

Checking in for my flight to Auckland at Perth airport, the check-in lady seemed to have some kind of problem with the fact I had a working holiday visa for New Zealand. She looked confused for a while, before deciding to "put [me] at the front" and "add a note so [I] didn't have any problems". I wasn't really anticipating any, until I saw the immigration card I had to fill in for arrival in New Zealand. It asked all sorts of questions about whether I'd been in contact with animals (unfortuna...

Taupo to see Liam

Yesterday was a pretty chill day in Auckland, Sean and I had a leisurely breakfast and walked around checking out some shops and stuff. I bought an all blacks jersey, and almost shat my pants when I sized down to a small before one fit. A small! I havent worn a small anything since I was 14 years old! There are definetly some massive Mauori dudes here, my body thanks me for not taking up professional rugby. We found a kick ass restuarant (degree) right on the warves overlooking the marina wit...

Return to the North Island

... one of the beaches. That same afternoon we headed off for a trek of part of the Abel Tasman coastal track. This is one of the "great walks" of New Zealand and you can do it in 3-5 days while camping along the way. Much to Declans disappointment we didn't have time for the full thing and had to make do with a 4 hour walk along part of the coast. More gorgeous beaches along the way. Next ...

Along, up, up and yeti's

... probably worth it though. After the seemingly never ending Taponga Saddle surprised us by finally ending, we zoomed down into forests which although logically I knew had no yeti's in, being to young and small, looked like yeti country to me, steaming away with the drying rain. Eventually we found the motor camp for our first night of camping!

Tongariro National Park and Lake Taupo

... from the falls back into town stopping to enjoy some ice cream at the bungee jumping spot above the river and laugh at the people doing it! We also signed up for a somewhat crazy "day trip" to see the Waitomo Caves and glow-worms. We had heard about it before coming to NZ and didn't get a chance to stop off on our way to Rotorua so we signed up for a tourist shuttle bus trip out to the caves and back. they are about two hours west of Taupo on these winding roads. so ...

Volcanoes and Holy Smoking Holes

... was pretty benign, but it caused a further eruption under the lake which evaporated and threw boiling mud and steam over a huge area, burying not only the village we were visiting but 3 others as well. The museum was really good and the guide, Huru (apparently youngest brother of the current Maori king) was very entertaining, but the excavated village is a little disappointing. \ We ...
