Ayee Ladddy!

Edinburgh Got the train to Edinburgh via Preston. Its wierd how many places in the UK have the same names as places in Oz. Theres Perth, Camden, Penrith, everything. Edinburgh is a beautiful city. Especially at night when everything is lit up with christmas lights and what not. It doesnt even feel like a city. Old buildings everywhere and no sky scrapers. I dont know why al the citys in Australia have sky scrapers. I used to think thats what made a city. But not many citys at all have sky scr...

Edinburgh... The "Jewel" of Scotland

When I woke up in London, the first thing I did was go and eat. These free continental breakfasts are great! I know my mother would say I'm just being cheap, but in reality, they really fill me up! After toast and cereal and OJ, I feel really full... I almost don't need to eat for the rest of the day... except to just try some of the good local eatings. It turns out that Victoria Bus Terminal was alot farther than I thought so I was forced to use the Tube at rush hour. And I thought Toronto w...

Travel day today. Not much of an eventful day - just took the National Express bus to Edinburgh from victoria station. Took 10 hours - stopped off at lunch time for macdonalds. SLept most of the journey, but the country side was spectacular. The UK really is the farmer's paradise! Got to Edinburgh just before 7pm. Staggered around trying to find the shuttle bus to the hostel from waverley bridge. Waited till 7.30 and got to the hostel at 8. Checked the internet and went to bed. Hostel is fabu...

Edinburgh... and the trip so far!

Greetings all! Apologies for the silence - have been keeping myself busy and making use of the good weather we have had. Yesterday was a splendid warm sunny day in Edinburgh but this morning it is looking a little cooler and overcast so I am making use of the internet cafe at the hostel. The bus ride from London to Edinburgh was long, but after a hectic first couple of days busily touring the sites of London and Cambridge it was good to have a bit of time to sit back and relax. I am staying a...

... but one side has nothing - it's just bare and exposing a monstrous building left from the time when the area mined coal from under the sea. I ask a guy sat next to me what the building is used for now and he tells me that it's going to be dismantled but requires a lot of money and asbestos specialists to take it down. The coastline will look ...

Now for some action..

... the cold again, wondering where the hell this next bus is cos it wasn't on the schedule, and some random bus pulls up. Lovely old Stagecoach, joy. Getting on, the driver's moaning about how **** it was, and we're just like oh well it'll get us there right?

"We'll see.." .. highly reassuring, mate.

No issues though, and then around 11am we pull into Edinburgh! Finally got to see the Forth Bridge, and then seeing ...

The Heart of Scotland

... em back! Now that's what I call a family!" Try thinking of this in a Scottish accent.

A small glass of Glenmorangie and then off for dinner. Haggis, neeps (Turnips mashed) and Tatties (Spuds mashed). Very nice and very filling.

Home to meet the family. A great welcome, some more Scottich accents and off to the Motherwell version of an RSL for a sing along. Some ...

Edinburgh - Day 5: "My Heart for Lothian"

... to say this part of it was my favorite. I love all the closes and their names, i.e. Fishmongers Close, Fleshmongers Close, Sugar House Close, Tolbooth Wynd, etc. It was fun to imagine people a couple hundred years ago living and working among those narrow passageways. I know these thoughts are heavily romanticized, and that life in the closes at that time wasn’t all that pleasant. In fact, our guide in the vaults talked about how the residents of the closes had a ...

A Scottish birthday...

... a bit of a relax. Dinner that night we went to a gastro pub and the boys had their second haggis of the day - this time complete with whisky sauce, neeps and taties. V traditional. I had a Scottish salmon salad and Hollie had chicken with drambuie - all v yum. Then we popped back to the hostel to put on all thermals and layers and assembled in the centre of the Old Town at 9.30pm for a ghost tour - a group of about 15 of us were led around Edinburgh by a caped guide who told us stories of ...

Edinburgh

Arrived at Edinburgh and stayed at the Sheraton Grand. Our delux room had a direct view of the Edinburgh castle... across the street! The next day we rented a car and took off for the Highlands. I had reserved a room at a sweet B&B on the loch in Plockton. Extremely romantic. Drove to the Isle of Skye... Beautiful beyond words.
