London at 1:00 am

I met a boy from Melbourne at the hostel and I told him I had been hoping to take night photos of London, so we went walking all over the city for a couple hours at like 1 am. I got some great photos!

My Happy Place

I still had a couple days on my railpass for Scotland and England so I decided to use it to go visit Dover for a day from London. I just heard of Dover from word of mouth, I heard about the white cliffs and wanted to go see. I don't know how I even knew it had a castle...word of mouth too I guess. When I arrived I decided to head up to the castle and I only have Edinburgh Castle to compare it to but I have to say I liked this one so much more! Dover Castle was much less crowded and the rooms ...

Way too Much Fun at Madame Tussaud's

Out of all the lame, uber-touristy things I've done, I'm pretty sure this one takes the cake. Not only did I go to this place but I posed with most of the wax figures as well. It was so much fun though!!!!!
This experience definitely would not have been as fun if someone else weren't there with me. I was there with Bernice, whom I met at the hostel. We switched cameras so she was my photographer and I was hers, it was much easier that way. We don't have any photos together though which is...

So London IS cold

So yeah... they weren't lying when they said that it's COLD in London! Hahaha! Oh, and it's crazy that the sun doesn't rise until about 8am. I actually arrived at 6am (an amazing 20 minutes AHEAD of schedule!) I think it was the first (and probably only) time I've ever had a flight arrive early! So of course it was too dark and foggy for me to see anything when I flew into London, but that's ok, I'll be here long enough to see everything, I'm sure. I took an airport shuttle to the hostel sinc...

London

I'm in London! In keeping with my flight luck so far, my flight was delayed (as all my flights so far have been cancelled or delayed!) due to the crash that happened at Heathrow on Thursday last week (which I knew nothing about having not seen an English newspaper for several weeks!) However, it's really nice to be back in an English speaking country, although when I buy something in shops I still keep having a slight panic moment of 'how do I say thankyou in their language?!' before remember...

Wonderful...Expensive...London

I went into this trip knowing we would face some adversity at some point...I'm just glad we got it out of the way in the beginning. London is actually fabulous, I love it, even though we've only been here 2 nights and a day. As I left this last, we were headed on our way to Dublin airport where we going to collect our bags that had finally made it from Philadelphia, and then hop on a Ryanair flight to London. Well we made it to London, but no bags. Yes, that's right, another day in my grey ca...

London baby!

Theres nothing like a 36 hours worth of travelling, 1 1/2 hours sleep the night before, a headache caused by a screaming baby from Sydney Singapore and compounded by a screaming baby from Singapore to London, arriving in a foreign country only to catch the peak hour packed tube (London railway system) with oversized luggage which you have to haul up and down many flights of stairs at 8am to make you desperately crave a quiet corner to sleep. But alas, this was not the case when I arrived at t...

The places where Monopoly was named after!

Back in london today, after a 15 hour bus ride, 1 /2 hour ferry ride, another 2 1/2 hour bus ride, 20 minute tube (london train system) rideI am home! Home sweet home....well for the next 3 nights anyway. On the ride home there was an all night orchestra of coughging, wheezing and sneezing. Needless to say that I have come down with something. Although it was inevitable, with the copious amounts of alcohol, lack of sleep, shared sleeping quarters and a day confined in airconditioning circulat...

Here we are in ol' London town

Well, I've been up since 3am (local time), and made my way quite snappily from Heathrow to Russell Square to my accommodation - the Generator Hostel. First impressions of London? - It's really easy to get around - getting around Melbourne & Sydney would be more daunting to a new-comer - The lack of cars. Got out of Russell Square station to be confronted by nice streets with quite a few people around, but really only service trucks dotting the streets here and there. Managed to have a sho...

The East End (old London)

So, second full day arrives, and I've decided to change the order in which I go see things - I met a couple guys from Melbourne who decided that after yesterday's impressive work with guiding us around the Westminster end of town, that perhaps the New Europe "Old City' tour would be worth a burl - couldn't agree more, and since I knew that I'd be getting the same guide I couldn't go wrong. Anyway - Peter & Dave didn't make it in the end, but I had a great time getting around and seeing th...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Generator (No Facilities) London

Yeeck... it was simply disgusting !

from Cyn83
I stayed at the Generator a year ago with my classmates. We were in London for two days and slept one night in this hotel.

Should I use one word to describe this experience, it's easy : "disgusting" !!!

The rooms aren't clean at all, the beds are old and filthy, they are no toilets of showers in them and you have to walk several corridors before you find them... And honestly, they are even worse than the rooms ! Hopefully we only stayed one night because I couln't have taken a shower in one of those ! Would have feel dirtier after the shower than before !

In my case it wasn't a problem to sleep in those dormitory for five or six people because I knew the people I was with... but wath if you go there on your own and end up with complete strangers... Having to share toilets and showers is bad enough without having to share your room as well !

Bar and place to eat breakfast are nice but I've also seen better and the all hotel is really noisy...

The location is ok but you still have to walk 10 minutes to arrive at the underground... And if you want to go to any of the famous places in London you'll have to use underground or taxi because it isn't that close from the hotel...

Cheap but uncomfortable

from A TripAdvisor Member
Wouldn't stay there again. Cheap and convenient, but too big, noisy, cramped, hot. I wouldn't have slept at all if I hadn't taken earplugs.

Odd but great nevertheless.

It was kind of strange to stay at a hostel which still keeps its former prison flair and was certainly not the cleanest place I have ever seen.

Still, the staff is really friendly and helpful, the atmosphere is great (at least for younger people, I'd say), one can feel safe on the way to the hotel and also while staying there, the food is excellent and the sandwich machine and bar are real plus points, too.

The worst place in the world

from A TripAdvisor Member
I have never been to a place like the generator before; I hope I never go there in my life again. In my opinion it was the worst experience of my life. The food, the facilities, the atmosphere smelled of smoke! The environment was not friendly at all. I felt that it was not up to my standards, which meant it was not what I expected, and other people I have spoken to agree. My advice is to choose wisely when deciding where to stay in London, and to do some more research before you stay there.

I agree regarding Generator London

from Steve817
I agree with the previous reviewer. I'm older than most of the clientele that was there, and thought what a rip-off for these kids.

Breakfast was minimal, high noise level , "don't drink the water" signs on sinks, long lines at reception, relatively expensive for 2 people in one room..."

Don't stay here

from A TripAdvisor Member
Honestly, I have never been more disgusted by a place in my entire life. I'm not one to have shared bathrooms to begin with, but I can deal. The problem was these bathrooms were absolutely disgusting. They crack it up to be a fun, social atmosphere, but I would rather sleep on the streets of London than stay there again!

Fantastic place to stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
After having stayed in the hotel from hell we went into the Generator.

We were more than just satisfied: clean rooms, clean bathrooms, excellent food (breakfast and dinner), friendly staff, good atmosphere and a nice little bar. I have enjoyed my stay in the Generator very much. We didn't have much comfort but it was great nevertheless. I would stay there everytime I come back.

The generator

from A TripAdvisor Member
Ya know, erm, it was an experience above all others. erm..everyone there was american, the buggers! i was expecting londoners ya no - "alwhite lovee, ow ya doin mate, 5 for a pound" but no, yanky land!

also, summerbay! .. apart form that, very pleasant, apart from the austrailian at hmv! talking about neighbours. Also, the pollution in london, was horrific...terrible..ya no, the worst ever! in the tube...there was no airrr...and i got out, in oxford to find, there was no air!! Anyway, moving back to the generator...very good!

Good and bad

from A TripAdvisor Member
THE GOOD: Very safe environment (security checks names at door after dark, locks on toom doors, etc.) Free continental breakfast was great.

Pub/club downstairs lots of fun. Reasonably priced, good location. THE BAD: Cold showers (although I heard other people didn't have this problem), phones only take a certain type of calling card, you can't drink the tap water (my biggest complaint).

Almost Perfection

from A TripAdvisor Member
The perfect place too stay for one or two nights in London! Excellent location, clean, friendly staff for around £20 per night private room. Not for the over 30's however, as thin walls and lots of noise (mainly drunk Americans) can be a pain.
