Greetings from San Jose, Costa Rica, where pura vida reigns, and it also rains and rains and rains. It´s "winter" here and thus there is a monsoon every afternoon. It has started early today.. perhaps Mother Nature wants to get her work done early on Sunday. I spent a really lovely week making new friends and being hosted by some wonderful folks. After yet another bus ride through gorgeous rolling hills - it is REALLY green here - Gabriela picked me up at the TransNica bus station where I sat...

So meine Lieben.
8th November 2009:
The bus to San Jose (Costa Rica) was comfortable enough but getting through customs was a nightmare, took nearly 2 hours but I don´t know how. They just seemd to be on slow motion for the sake of it. Our bags got checked going out of Panama, then going into Costa Rica, both by random looking people with no uniforms or badges. Then about half hour into the country the bus was stopped by police with sniffer dogs, that was more like it. In total the bus took 9 hours and...
After Granada I went back to Managua and spent a few quiet days with Jono and Sonia before my bus left for San Jose. The bus trip was fairly uneventful apart from the border crossing into Costa Rica. Interestingly there were several duty free shops at the border which made me wonder, as I had heard that Costa Rica was one of the most expensive countries in central america along with Panama.
Anyway it took more than an hour to go through Nicaraguan departure process and then through...
Not much to report except a short stop in another country and our first precipitation of the trip. I think this is something we should get used to. I will take this opportunity to mention that you do start to learn things about a person when you spend this much time together. For example I now know 100% that Nicole is Murray's daughter. I would also like to mention that Nicole omitted the fact that she was quite ill the next day after partying until 4 AM. So people from ''Fac'' can party the ...

... rice and beans, this time with a cheeky bit of cheese on top. Got through the last lesson at school okay though spent most of it playing scrabble and talking football, which was fine by me. Said Adios to my friend and amigo Luis then grabbed a box of chocolates on the way home which was a parting gift for my temporary family. Realized I had a wedge of local currency to shift so had to bus it back into San Pedro to swap it for some US dollars before I left the ...
San Jose, Province of San Jose, Costa Rica garyjampot... one was San Juan de Orient where we went to a ceramics factory. We saw how the ceramics are made and learned about how the family that owns the "factory" teaches the craft to young people in the area. It took a long time for Annie and I to pick the ceramics we wanted but I think we are both very happy with our purchases (and are really hoping they make it home in one piece!). The next town was Catarina where they specialize in herbs, plants and fruit.
We then went to look ...
... from a farm in the Carribean-slope town of Guapiles. And then there is the association of indigenous women in Talamanca, who sell organic chocolates in Puerto Viejo de Limon. After tasting chocolate in Costa Rica, you will know what "Que Rico" really means!
Paraiso, Costa Rica tropicalcr... and that meets my standards just fine. After unpacking we headed to the city center to have a look around. It was surprisingly busy for a mid-day afternoon. Does anyone work in this town? I was slightly disappointed at the heavy American influence. Lunch choices were Pizza Hut, Burger King, and Quiz nos. Need to stop for shoes? No problem, Pay less is around the corner. Anyhow we took a look around and ended up at some dive bar drinking Imperial, the local beer ...
San Jose, Province of San Jose, Costa Rica karensweetland... Soon the pianist (who looked just like Marti) started playing other familiar melodies that were also of another era. Meanwhile, the Bert Parcher of the church was setting up the microphones. Neal poked me and said that there was a man behind us that really did look like Bert (but not the one setting up the microphones!) Can you tell that we miss all of you at MOTA? By 9:10 a.m. the church, with 150 people, was bursting at the seams. And at 9:45, the processional began ...
San Jose, Costa Rica stix_naToday ended up being a good day. I woke up around 5 a.m. I could not sleep. Then I heard someone out in the kitchen and I went out and it was Xinia. I told her we missed her yesterday. Then later today I found out that today she turned 40. 6 kids and 40 years old....wow. I tried sitting outside before breakfast but all of the dogs were there. She has 4 and I think just 2 came and the our house has 2 as well. Federico said - maybe you should stay ...
