Fraser Island

Chucking down with rain when we arrive in Hervey Bay and continues for the rest of the day. Staying at A1 Fraser Roving which is a pretty nice hostel. Raining again the next day and we get a storm that night - off to Fraser Island in the morning, if it hasn't been rained away! We catch our bus the next day and then a ferry over to the island. Spot some weird looking dolphins on our way and it's still raining! We are doing a 2 day/1night guided tour and our guide seems pretty cool. It's a good...

On the 14th we catch the bus to Hervey Bay, staying at 'Fraser Roving'. The hostel is really spacious with pool, bar etc & we get a room with a balcony. The main reason for our stop here is a trip to Fraser Island. We will be going on a 2 night 3 day 4wd camping trip to Fraser Island with a group of 9. A couple of hours after we arrive at our hostel we have a meeting about the trip, how to not get savaged by Dingoes, the do's & don't & we meet our group; Laura, Lucy & Michael ...

Hervey Bay – Sunday 11th to Tuesday 13th October

I did little in Hervey Bay other than use it as a mainland base for Fraser Island. I met Pauline from Brisbane on my first night for a late dinner, which ended up being a pasty from a corner shop due to all restaurants and takeaways being closed late on a Sunday evening. I spent the next day preparing for the trip, which included an hour-and-a-half presentation on what to do on Fraser Island, which included being Dingo aware, driv...

Fraser Island

This was going to be good fun as this was not driving an automatic van but a manual 4x4 around the world largest sand island. We had to go to the palace backpakers in Hervey bay to sign in at seven in the morning. We then had to get our van and get all the stuff we were going to need for three days on the island. we had tents, tarps, cooking equipment fuel, water, food, tinnies, people, ferry tickets and off we went into the unknown. The first day on the island we went and seen a shipwreck on...

Dingoes and endless beach

We set out for our Fraser Island tour from a little town called Rainbow Beach. Not much happening there but a few hotels that cater for people going to Fraser Island, which is not very far away. We stayed in the aptly named 'Frasers' hostel, and had booked ourselves onto a one day tour to save time. We set off early in the morning in a 4 wheel drive coach, and made the crossing to the island on a car ferry. Driving around Fraser is very bumpy as it is all sand, and it is easy to get stuck. We...

Hervey Bay

Due to the stresses of the night before we had no patience to look around the town of 1770 (which by the way is the only place in Australia...or the world, whose name is actually a number...get that, good!) so we drove to Hervey Bay... the place where everyone does their Fraser Island tours from. We found a hostel called Fraser Roving which gave you a couple cheap nights in their hostel if you did their tour which sounded good to us. We did plan on being in Sydney for New Year but that just d...

Sand, Dingoes and 4WD

On the bus from Agnes Water to Hervey Bay we met the English couple from Mission Beach again - this really is a small stretch of coast!! They were on their way to Bundaberg (home of Bundaberg rum or "Bundy"). We reached Hervey Bay in the afternoon and after we checked in, we went for a walk along the beach and checked out the town. We bought some water in a supermarket and I nearly came to blows with the cashier over the price - it was nearly twice the price because it came from the fridge. N...

Merry Christmas from Australia!!!

Hi everyone!!! It is Christmas here in Australia and 22 minutes to Christmas for you guys over in Canada, so I am here wishing you all a very Merry Christmas! Lisa and I have spent a very unreal Christmas here in Hervey Bay. It is so hot out that it definitely doesn't feel like Christmas at all... I keep having to remind myself! Those of you in Canada are all so lucky to have a white Christmas though... I'm totally jealous! I've made a little video for you guys, so I hope this works! Miss and...

Visiting Fraser Island

Hi, We arrived in Hervey Bay in time for tea and indulged ourselves in an all-you-can-eat Mexican buffet in the hostel for 4pounds95 each. We were up toooo early the next morning at half6 to get our day tour to Fraser Island. It was *a little* chilly at that time in the morning as we waited for the bus to pick us up. Fraser Island is a gigantic sandbar measuring 120km by 15km, it was created by thousands of years of longshore drift. Although you'd be wrong to imagine it as desert island, rain...

... waiting for Ewan to bring our lunch over when I saw him chatting to some random guy. I thought maybe he had made a friend at the salad bar ;) It turns out it was one of the guys he travelled through Mexico and to Hawaii with in 2000!!! Anyway, we have been invited to stay with him and his wife for a couple of days which is nice. So far Ewans extensive travelling has made meeting new people very easy!
