South Island Tour
Here's what happened on our '18 Day Whistle Stop Tour' of the South Island in a very aged, battered, scraped tiny Toyota 'Starlet' 1.3 Auto (yes 'auto' for those that didn't realise you could get such a small engine in an auto - we requested a manual but they couldn't provide!) 25th - 27th March CHRISTCHURCH. After catching our plane by default, we …
Fantastic Time on the Ice
The drive here was fairly uneventful - a pretty grey day. Scenery was very forested, but one particular part of the coast just north of Haast was spectacular in that it was absolutely covered in driftwood - an unearthly arrangement of assorted flotsam, jetsam and stones, some of which had been arranged by human hand into shapes and piles. Very …
NZ day 8 - South Islander glacier girl
This morning was a strange one, me & Jennie had both put our names down for the glacier walk but we both had issues. Me & my stupid bruised toe and Jennie has been bitten on her ankle which has swollen up. Now this wasn't going to stop us plus it was really my only extreme activity (if you can call it that) that I could do. I'm really …
Hiking Franz Josef Glacier
12th of October
It took most of the morning to travel from Greymouth to Franz Josef. We stopped off at Hokitika which is a town famous for Pounamu (Greenstone) and Ross which is a town famous for its Gold Mining. We then travelled through Westland National Park before arriving in the cute little alpine village of Franz Josef.

I do not want to leave this hostel. Amazing, awsome. The manager want to help, want to give informations. FREE Tea, Coffee and sugar. And the glasses were clean. No "whatever that is, in the sugar... aehm.."
Clean, place, comfy. In the livingroom was a fire...

Rooms smaller and carmped, too much traffic, housekeeping not as good as usual though I think they try. JUst too small FOR NUMBER OF PEOPLE STAYING. there are better options I am sure in Franz Josef.

A small in the corner spot is deceptive.
Multi storied, sauna, staff well versed in the activities on hand and always happy to offer advice.

Room was crap, and the advertised rates are not the rates you pay UNLESS you're a member. Advertised rates should be what everyone pays for comparison purposes otherwise what's the point, I could say my hostel is $2 a night, but then put in the smallprint there's a $100 non-members fee on top! Rip off.
