clean enough, bathrooms were a floor up or down, making it an inconvenience in the morning and night, big rooms very spacious

          The noisiest place ever!

The "Backpackers bar" downstairs charged $10 for a pint, hardly backpacker prices. We paid in advance for our 5 nights, then when they lowered the prices of the rooms they refused to refund us the difference, as if they didn't know the prices would change when we paid! Out of the 5 nights, we had 2 nights' sleep, we were on floor 7, yet the music from the bar on floor 1 sounded like it was in the next room, and it went on until 5am! Half of the facilities like cookers and washing machines didn't work, in fact we had to spend about $20 just to dry our washing because the dryers were crap! Overall - absolutely rubbish, stay somewhere else for your own sake.

The empire had free pool and cheap beer what wasn't to like. Finally I left to go and take the overnight bus. I was travelling with firefly bus company it was an …

I flew into Melbourne early in the morning. After dropping the luggage off and having breakfast, I was off to start my adventure. Unfortunately, it was Christmas so everything was closed except for... the zoo! Which was an entertaining activity. After visiting the Federation Square and a stroll along the Yarra River, I enjoyed the famous St Kilda …

          Preparation

I had 3 months to get fit enough to hike 20km trails graded 'hard' for days on end. My plan was to do 1/2h brisk walk each day and on weekends do an approx. 20km hike in the Warrandyte State Parks nearby. On my first walk in my dusted off hiking boots, I only got 100m before encountering what felt like knives in my lower leg muscles. With persis...
