Day 112 - Quito - Big Sports Club

We rose early, had breakfast and were at the Secret Garden for the last two hours of our Spanish Lessons at 8am. We really enjoyed our ten hours of lessons ($5 per hour) and covered a lot in that time.

At the end of the lesson our spanish teacher gave us directions on how to go cheaply to the Midad del Mundo (the centre of the world), which is park signifying where the equator goes through Ecuador. We were originally going to catch a taxi for about $15, but as it turned out ...

Volunteering in Ecuador, 2. contribution

... they had always been like this and I thought to myself it must be the growing up on a farm and with a loving family, which have made them this way. I hope very much to see them again one day.

Ilaló one more time

Sunday the 27th I decided to climb another mountain. It turns out that it’s the whole region of mountains that’s called Ilaló, so yet again I were to make it to one of the peaks of Ilaló. This time only Freddy and Alex from my family came with ...

Back in Quito and the Otavalo Market

... Maria very generously offered to take us out in Quito and also drive us along the very windy mountain lanes to the big market on Saturday in Otavalo.

On the way there we stopped off for some rather tasty steak for lunch and then spent a couple of hours wandering around the market town on Saturday. On the way back we stopped off at the Middle of the Earth to take the obligatory pictures of us crossing the Equator line and finished the day off by having some very ...

Braving the Basilica

... heels breezing upward. Our shame was palpable. In broken Spanish and wild gesticulation, we asked to take a picture of her climbing a ladder so that we could capture the moment. She consented, and insisted that we take a series of beauty shots with different combinations of people, situations, and hair positioning. She was into it. We wanted to get down. Badly.
Fast forward to the other tower, the bell tower on the opposite side of the cathedral ...

I make a terrible tourist.

... first meal again, and you have bundles of energy and feel like a human being again. That was Friday for me. And so i finally emerged out of my hibernation, found myself some friends (it also coincided with the hostel getting completely full and some cool people being in my room), made some plans for dinner... ah indian food. Sounds strange in Ecuador i know, but after six months with only one bad indian meal, this was fabulous! Well it was great anyways. I´m ...

New Town and unexpected bus trip

... timetables on the internet. All we knew was that the bus terminal was a short distance south-west of the Old Town, and the name of the bus company. After tediously fruitless searching, we only managed to find the number of the bus company, and decided to ask the receptionist to call them. Apparently, there was only one bus to Montañita a day, and it left at 8pm that night, meaning that we were now no longer staying for an extra night - we had to be in Montañita by Sunday 5th.
<br ...

Fare You Well

... for.

Many people have asked how much this trip is costing me. I have spent around $4000 in the last three months. Roughly, $45 per day. This Includes airfare, buses, visas, hotels, food, etc. Unfortunately, with my mortgage at home and bills from home, the real cost of the trip is closer to double that. It could have been done much cheaper, but I allowed myself luxuries here and there. Some nights I just didn´t feel like sharing a room with 13 other smelly ...

(this all happened in seconds of course) the free fall was crazy....but the natural high of triumph was worth every second. i was ready to trek on! we grabbed our bikes and went to Mando de la Novia, there you can catch a cable car to the side that we were on to the other side where the waterfall was. i was under the impression that ...

Time to leave Quito monkey whisperer

Ecuador is beautiful. I included more info on the photos posted as well. There are tons of hiking options as high as 19,900, and any kind of outdoor activity you can think. We visited the Amazon Basin. It is cool riding in a motorized canoe through twisting rivers pouring rain with your mouth open to taste fresh water and then turn a corner and smack, hit another motorized canoe going the other direction. Scared the hell out of me but cool. A lot of hiking ...
