I made my way up to Belgium today. A few locals in Paris told me about a carpooling site called BlaBlaCar. I arranged a ride from Paris to Brussels for only 23€! And I met three new people, all who live in Brussels. We exchanged info and I'm thinking I'll stay a night in Brussels to hang out with a new friend! I took the train to Bruges and …

Quiet, calm and glorious Bruges

Aug 19th. Bruges. I'm sitting in Patricia's Bar having a beer watching the canals light up with the gold of late afternoon, its 7:30 pm... I love these long summer days. Blues & jazz wash over me while I sit back and try not to think about how sore my feet are.
I've had a long day travelling from Amsterdam. I was up before 7 and out of the …

... was presented in a very interactive way. I read a little sign in one of the town centres that spoke of the devastation to Belgium and it's people during WWI. In 1915, over 5,000 Belgians fled to France for safety from the Germans. In 1919, only 500 returned and of those 79 left as they couldn't handle what they had returned to - their beautiful village had been levelled. We visited Hill 62 today - wow. Josh ...

Sidestep to Brugge

... of guess-work and co-operation from the bus driver. The room is again pretty small but the bathroom is a magnificent size. Who'd have thunk?
We wander into town - a short walk. Not really sure of what to see and the map they give you at the hotel is not a big help. In any case, it's all pretty amazing stuff. We took the late afternoon Speed Ferries service over to Bologne and stayed there for that evening as we weren't too keen on driving to Bruges late into the night. Instead we woke up the next morning to fog. It continued throughout the 4 hours or so that it took us to get to ...

Basic facilities, but the staff are really nice. Standard fare of ham & cheese, bread & cereal for breakfast but no toaster... Shops jest outside the hostel and they give you free access to a microwave.
