Although you have to walk quite a bit from the train station and the historical center, it is a good and affordable alternative.

Brugge is a walking and cycling city, with many narrow cobbled streets, made more impressive by the canals. We wandered into the main market square via lots of chocolate shops (there are 500 in the city!). We saw a canal cruise on offer, which has …

... to say we were only treated to this legend of Westvleteren and not to the beer itself during our tasting.

We were told by the owner of a beer store in Brugge that although we wouldn't be able to buy a crate of beer from the Abbey we would be able to try some of the fabled brew at a tavern that is beside the Abbey and owned by the Abbey. So we decided to make the pilgrimage to Westvleteren.
