... as well. We also saw the tomb of Caesar which was pretty cool. We walked around for a few hours and then headed over to the Colosseum. All I have to say is WOW! Definitely took me by surprise at the way it made me feel. I was pretty much in awe the entire time we were in there. It was hard to believe that I was standing in this ´stadium´ that thousands of people and animals were killed in...and most of it was decided by ...
Rome, Lazio, Italy kkb-myadventure... Perfect timing for the sunset, I saw the Spanish steps from the top and walked down to see the sunken boat, it was amazing! I planned on visiting the Vatican and the Vatican museums the next morning, but by the time I studied the map and tried to semi-plan my day it was already 10ish, Joey at the hotel advised to get there early the day after instead. So off I went to check out other sites. The Trevi fountain was in amazing shape, not sure what I ...
Rome, Italy montrealmia... over bearing a bottle of wine and were welcomed into their home whole heartedly. Elvira had made us lasagna for dinner (YUM!!) and with some wine and a nice starter of rock melon wrapped in prosciutto, it was a great meal. They had two American girls staying there as well, on a study type holiday. It was a nice night, and was good to be able to have a nice home cooked meal. It was sad to leave Rome, defiantly one of my favorite cities. Miles so Far: 14219
Rome, Lazio, Italy laine... because things are as good as lost if you don't know they're there. Ok, so after that illuminating catastrophe that wasn't a catastrophe, Dad and I went to see the tourist sights. First stop was the Vatican and St. Peter's Cathedral. As a person who has never seen a building of more than about 300 years old, I was shocked at the intricacy and sheer enormity of the work that must have been done to create these buildings. It is amazing to think how people in the ...
Rome, Lazio, Italy giulianat... Something about Prodi, the prime minister, being a communist. It felt more like a festival, really. Ashley, Danielle, and I were holding off on seeing a lot of the major sights that day because we were awaiting two other friends that would arrive later that night. We toured a couple of churches around our hostel (there are SO many churches in Rome, ALL of which are gorgeous and unique) and eventually ended up bumping into the Trevi Fountain. It is so pretty at night. We ...
Rome, Italy aldanielle86... school here for five weeks. For the rest of the day, we took a hop on hop off bus around town. Al thought it might be a good way to get around without taxis. But he made a bad choice of companies and the stops were not too convenient. But we did ride the bus all the way around and got off at Trevi fountain again. It's always so crowded there. It seems all the tourists ...
Rome, Italy allenm28... Park? In sidewalk cafes, why is it against the law to have a glass of scotch on one side of a partition where it happens to be legal to smoke a cigarette, but on the other side of the railing it's fine to have a drink but illegal to smoke? Is that boundary finite or does it change when the portable metal fence is moved closer to the street? And what happens at closing time when the staff takes the dividing wall inside? Is it still OK to have a drink there? If you really think ...
Rome, Italy the_stamms... its supposed to be walking distance, but the hostel staff recommended the metro. That was probably good advice, so far I haven't seen many signs to help us on our way, and the metro drops us off right where we needed to be. After a few minutes of getting ready and deciding whether to buy an umbrella from the many peddlers on the streets, we were on our way to find ...
Rome, Italy bjorn48... only to find that it is closed for renovations. Why no signs back up in town??? We followed the wall down into a gully, with great views up into the centre of town, with town walls and towers making for some good photos, but a steep walk back up. Now came the serious part. Having surveyed every gift shop in town, we now returned to various stores to buy gifts for everyone at work, and an "attente il gatto" (beware of the cat) for our dog Toupe. He is just a big cat ...
San Gimignano and Voltera, Italy gavinc... course of the year. We had picked the inauspicious date of the celebration of Faraugosto (the August fair) combined with an address by the Pope, to arrive in The Eternal City. On the positive side, many Romans had left the city for the cooler climes of the northern lakes or the coast, so the traffic is not as bad as it would normally be at other times of the year.

I went and sat on a giant plant pot in a square outside the station whilst Michelle, fluent in Italian, went off to find ...
