    ... important port, but Puerto Varas was the first port. It is a lovely village. We pass into Puerto Chico, the beach area of Puerto Varas. The beach is not sand rather it is ash and pebbles from the volcanic activity. We get our first look at the second largest lake in Chile, Llanquihue Lake. It is 339 square miles (877 square km) and over 1,000 feet (361 m) deep. It is calm as it laps up on the shore. We see small chalets on the shores and lots of trees ...

    For the first time on our voyage, much rain! Tendering was surprisingly easy perhaps because there was only a light wind and the tides were just right for avoiding big steps between ship and tender and then between tender and dock.     ... about an hour. All three of us were craving empanadas and we asked the reception at our hotel where to get the best! He recommended Café Danes where we had baked and fried meat empanadas and humita, something similar to a tamale. The food was delicious yet again!
