Stayed here for a day and night...what is the story with the weather here....it hasn't been this hot and humid since Suva in Fiji....it's swealtering. Arrived in the hostel late last night, got robbed with the taxi from the airport, but to be fair, the cabbie told a few good inpolitically correct jokes to keep me entertained. Got to the hostel and security threw me a key.I had to go find the room meself...it was room 13. After 30minutes walking around i came to the conclusion that the room di...
Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia eddieroqWe had a flight from Singapore to Darwin and back to 20 Kg weight limit thankfully! We got into Darwin at something like 5 in the morning and had to make our way through customs which took about an hour. No problems though so you won't see us on Border Control!! We had to sleep in the airport for a few hours because the shuttle wasn't running yet and our hostel wouldn't open anyway. The heat from the sun even at that hour of the morning was really strong and definitely felt different from the...
Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia mariethereseTook one of the worlds great train journeys on "The Ghan" as we travelled the 1600kms from Alice to Darwin. We got a great deal in the Red Kangaroo class (which basically means a nice comfy reclining seat) for the 2 day journey. Lots of buffet cars and winding passageways...very cool journey with an average speed of 85kms an hr. Arriving in Darwin the sky was full of smoke from bush fires that the rangers start on purpose here. They burn the scrub every year in a series of controlled(?!) fire...
Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia ruairiocDarwin was hot and humid compared with the west coast. The airport shuttle bus dropped us off at our hostel around lunch time. After an early start and the new heat we were more tired than hungry so we had an hour's siesta on our bunks in our wonderfully air conditioned twin room. When hunger called we braved the blistering heat and headed to Woolworths supermarket, getting a sandwich at a BP station en route. We got our dinner along with supplies for the train journey the following day. We t...

Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia sigurd... delicious food, and thoroughly immersed ourselves in colour and movement.

By Friday our chosen refrigeration engineer had diagnosed a faulty thermostat. Its replacement had to be flown from somewhere south and so could not be fitted until the following Wednesday. This opened the perfect window for our planned visit to Litchfield, more details of which in our next entry…
Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia atlarge... little pool. It is incredibly relaxing, so lovely to be spending time with family and a great way to be getting organised for the next leg of the journey.

One of our favourite pass-times in ol’ Darwin town is the wave pool so we take mum and dad and the kids down. Everyone has such a blast that we go the next day too! The kids are fearless and it is incredible watching them dive under waves, pop-up to catch a wave in and ...
Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia hindmarshOk, so today we did something that most people would ask us 'why?!' but the fact is that I've always wanted to go on the Ghan train. This train journey is one of the most epic in the world and goes from Adelaide, through the red heart at Alice Springs and then onwards up to Darwin. We cheated a bit coz we can't afford and don't have time for the whole journey, so we booked ...
Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia steph_nico... gas and oil field rigs there in the harbor so it has many uses then we went on to where they had the Anti aircraft batteries during the second world war and gave a very good account of the battle of Darwin this town as it was then was subjected to more bombs on its first rain then Pearl harbor had when the Japanese attacked it apparently they learnt from pearl harbor and used more bombs, the town and surrounding area was subjected to another 12mths of bombings before they were ...
Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia rossport... to Northern Territories. I was looking for my little green bird and the budgies that I saw labelled at the museum just do not seem to be the right colour. There was also a room dedicated to the story of Cyclone Tracy. It was humbling to see the devastation caused on Christmas Day in 1974. The room included a sound chamber where the actual sounds of the cyclone could be heard as recorded by someone who then donated the tape to the museum. The museum also contained an art gallery ...
