1ra. Avenida Sur No.8 Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala
Antigua is a wonderful city, filled with a relaxed colonial atmosphere. People seem very friendly, giving you a "hola" or "buenas dias" as they pass you by. The majority of the population seem to be indigenous mayan and many women wear the traditional clothes. Naturally, there are locals all around who try to sell you their handmade traditional crafts - especially tablecloths seem to be the big thing here.
The streets are all cobblestone - and a very uneven kind that is. I would not l...
Friday morning I woke up at 0530!!! Apparently, the jetlag was still getting the better of me. Postponed getting up as much as possible, and when I finally had showered and was hungry it was only 0645 and I realised that there would be no breakfast before 0730! My first day was spend just walking around, getting used to a slower pace of life. I visited the ruins of an old monastery and watched children performing in the Parque Central in honor of "Dia des ninos" - the children's day. And the ...

After a mammoth journey I arrived groggy, dirty and exhausted in Guatemala City. Its good for the initial sensation on arrival to be negative: the next morning , which brings showers, and toothpasted teeth, and good food, makes the welcome to the new environment even more dramatic. Oh how I had forgotten the power of sunshine to evoke an unparralled sense of joy! (This may seem an extreme reaction, but i have been baracaded inside like a Kellarkind for 5 months) Although, being remove...

... And, the most fun place of the whole city...I think...is the market!
The market in Antigua is insane!! Jaime and I stumbled into the market one day, not knowing what we were in for, and literally got lost. There are no organized aisles or storefronts. It is all this giagantic maze where the fruit vendor stand merges into the dog food vendor stand merges into the underwear vendor stand merges into the cellphone cord vendor stand ...
... and either directly or indirectly asking for extra tips or even a free lunch, which was something that really brought the students out of their comfort zone. I do not think that the teachers had the right to exploit the situation like this, considering that we already were paying for attending the school. For the most of the 4 weeks, Maribel had a more or less functional cell phone with a broken keypad, but not once did she complain to me about it – she ...

I thank all the guys... and of we go! Nope, we still had the problem off passing each other. Upon this attempt the truck rips of the refrigerator vent, and both water inlet covers that are on the side of the vehicle completely off. I realize this was not my ...
... Not only in food, where there are restaurants for any imaginable types of food, but for activities, hotels and languages from anywhere in the world can be heard at any bar. We found a very nice restaurant that seems to be popular among the locals. They serve typical Guatemalan food, which was just what we wanted to try. The place looks like an old house. The food was amazing! and the prices were ok when compared to Costa Rica, however we ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala jaribg... route up the hill. The view on this hill was amazing and the police gave me 30 minutes to walk around and take pictures. Unfortunately my 30 minutes was up at the same time that the ladies finally arrived. I was hoping for an opportunity to practice some of my newly learned Spanish.
I had the policemen drop me off at Parque Central, there I had the usual Guatemalan breakfast of eggs and refried beans at a quaint restaurant, Cafe ...
Guatemala, Guatemala fatofi... working because you saw what happened to Recollecion in 1773... The attached convent is the site of the Fuente de Pescados, Central America's largest fountain at 80 feet in diameter. I was sorry not to spend more time in Antigua and I had intended to explore the highlands some more but it was just too cold. So after two nights I took an early shuttle and caught the bus to Flores...
Antigua, Guatemala margreet98... as they are much closer to Antigua then the beach. Then, if I had the time I'd schedule another half of a week or so to see the ruins on the other side of the country. I'm already planning my next trip back!
