This area was also the sight of a bloody civil war that killed 70,000. This area was closed to tourist for about 2 decades, from the 1980's

Then a tourist shop. They do great pottery here.

Finally back to the town, about 15:00.

Dinner of pizza, before catching the 20:00 bus to the next fun city.

Well, the bus arrived almost on time but was fuggy as hell as they refuse to ventilate the bus and passengers complain if you try and open a window, which of course, I did. The road was bumpy and curvy so I needed it. Did drop off a couple of times but my knee was killing so had to pop a painkiller in the dark.

The 5.45 arrival in the dark was, at least, at a bus station. It soon ...

Our guide was called Miguel, and of course, was crazy! The first day was pretty easy, as we descended down into the canyon. The top of the canyon was 3000m above sea level, and the base where we stayed for the night was 2500m. Our accomodation for the night, at the base of the canyon was called 'Oasis', as it featured a swimming pool and bar with happy hour! Our group bonded over some well deserved ...

September 14, 2013 - Success! We were up and out of the hotel in time to make our 5:30am flight. Unfortunately no coffee/tea was served. Grrr. We begin our "slow and steady" climb to higher altitudes this morning. Our first official destination, Arequipa, is at 7,638 feet. The first test of our high altitude tolerance.
