Santiago, Chile

I left Auckland at 6pm on 3rd December, flew for 11 hours and arrived in Santiago at 1pm on 3rd December. Weird! (My first experience of the international date line!) After 3 months back in civilisation it is back to honking horns, pollution (not as bad as India or China), and trying to remember not to put toilet paper down the toilet! It is also back to non-existent tourist information offices..... there were 3 marked on my map - the first 2 didnīt exist; the third one was closed! There was ...

Santiago

Santiago, name sake of San Diego, was originally named after part of a whale. Thatīs if you believe news anchorman Ron Burgandy. Otherwise its the capital of Chile and we have no idea where the name came from, a saint possibly. Our initial impression of the place was a bit rough but after 3 days exploring we found it was really nice. There are lots of interesting buildings and monuments and you can walk for ages weaving through different little parks and green areas. We stayed in a really nic...

The City of the South....but on strike..!!

... as we both havenīt been there. But also with the choice of Chile was the " only " 3 days of Auckland. Or the " half the continent of the U.S and to Costa Rica. So as you can see....life is not so easy if you plan a trip around the world! There are options, but they all are limited. Anyway, Chile touchdown and we booked for the Don Santiago hostel. Just a couple of blocks away from city center and as we arrived on a Sunday, all shops were closed. Even some bars we passed as we ...

... br>In the midst of the misery and panic, scapegoats were found. Jews were persecuted even after the pope called on Catholics to treat them with some respect. At Bastle in January 1349 a wooden house was built on an island in the Rhine, 200 Jews were forcibly placed inside, and the crowed house was set on fire. Two months later the Jewish people of the German town Worms preferred to burn themselves alive in their houses.

Staying in Santiago

... br>We had a quick stop for lunch and then carried on walking back to the main square and finally back to the hotel. That evening we went to a local resturant, that was recommended in the guide book. We walked from the hotel along some very dark and deserted streets and we thought maybe the resturant had closed... right at the end of the street we found the building and went in, really not expecting much. Once inside we found the whole population of the city!! the ...

Don´t Cry for Me Argentina

... Mendoza, Argentina. Crossing boarders by overnight bus may have been the most dreadful experience of the trip. First of all, I like sleep, and when I have to get up and tell someone I DONīT HAVE ANY BANANAS while Iīm groggy does not make Jess a happy camper. The good thing that overnight buses do accomplish is that you donīt have to pay for a hotel/hostel and when you wake up you are in the city you want to explore next. The first thing I ...

... We ended up spending 3 days in Santiago though didnīt really bond with the place. We felt it was just another city.... though it does have some interesting museums and galleries. Especially enjoyed an exhibition showing cartoons from last 30years- very entertaining.

Santiago and Vina del Mar

... walk around the area and did a little shopping - then we headed over to Bellavista where we shopped at Patio Bellavista and then had dinner at Como Agua para Chocolate - Like Water for Chocolate. The meal was excellent and then after dinner we walked around a bit and then figured we should head back to the ship - as we had a 2 hour drive ahead of us. We made it back by midnight. The next day we had asked Glen and Roseann if they wanted ...

Sleepless in Santiago

... shades. Surrendering to the new day, I also opened my shade. And then, just as a pregnant woman momentarily forgets all the physical anguish she endured giving birth upon seeing her newborn (or so I've heard), our delivery into Chilean airspace erased all thoughts of physical discomfort. The first site of Chile electrified my otherwise enervated body with anticipation. I pressed my nose to the window, and marveled at the ...
