... else all the while sweating bullets even though it wasn't a very hot day.

Our first part of the climb included very beautiful and verdant scenery but after about 1 hour of hiking this amazing greenery gave way to a landscape that looked something more like Mars or the moon. The second part of the hike was not only arduous but dangerous as well and the horses won’t go there.

The ground we were walking on was not stable in the least as it was made up of a ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala seraphim50... The only downside to the day was the intense rain that started as I was leaving the town so I had to endure the hour long bus ride back to Guate with wet shoes and pants (Doña Emma that morning had told me, completely out of the blue in an old person like fashion, that it was the "day of rain" and I should take a jacket....she could have looked at the weather I suppose but I prefer my version better).
Today, I walked around Avenida Reforma ...
Guatemala City, Western Highlands, Guatemala cgomezblank... really get any great pictures.

Arrived in Antigua around 3 (local time) and were driven to our hotel, Casa Florenica. Great success! At $50 a night, it is certainly more expensive than the $8-$10 per person options out there but we figured we would start safer and then rough it as we ran out of money :) The hotel is a lot more beautiful than it was on the website - I will post some pictures later but the rooms are clean and there is hot water, free ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala astoriavslbI will cut the suspense. The street fried chicken was only a poor decision on taste.

I wake up refreshed and hopefully caught up on sleep. A quick shower and I head down for breakfast. it´s a buffet. $5. I eat a lot.

After breakfast we head out into the city to find a hat. The story is that Ashik and Blair are hat people. We passed a few hat shops on the drive down and are obsessed with finding the hat ...
Panajachel, Guatemala, Guatemala travelrobLes and Judy took Barrett for 3 days!!! They went to the black sand beach of Montericco on the first day, stayed in port on the 2nd day (Puerto Quetzal) and then to visit children at a library in Antigua on the last day. What did Matthew and I do, you're asking? Well, as this was the longest time we'd ever been apart from Bear (we had one overnighter while in Namibia), we really took advantage of the opportunity and did things we'd never be able to do if ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala aniseh... that's definitely not the case for everyone. Robbery at gunpoint happens semi-regularly, but almost always it's the stupidest of the stupidest tourists. Anyway, Marta really does appear to have an over-active perception of being in danger. From pretty minor things like walking to a store at the end of our street at night to taking tuk tuks (small, three-wheel taxis) to whatever else. She especially fears Guate City. And you know, it's not ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala jaynichvolodov... When I finally made it to the top, the view was breath-taking. Xela to the north, a line of volcanoes to the east, an active volcano to the south, and the Pacific ocean to the west. I do have a photo of me topless at the summit, but I haven´t posted it here for decency´s sake, and in any case, it spoils the view. We sat down for breakfast and watched the volcano to the south erupt. Now, I have always thought that volcanic eruptions ...
Quetzeltenango, Guatemala sam180... out on the skeletal remains to discover the cause of death, their identity, and other stuff. The experience was exceptionally strange: I'd never really seen a skeleton of someone before, and the entire context was macabre. Nevertheless, the work is very, very important. Findings are being used to legally support the case for genocide in the Inter-American Court (think that's what it's called), as well as a case in Spain, against the ones who carried out massacres, generals, and ...
Guatemala City, Western Highlands, Guatemala jaynichvolodovFly out and into LA. From what I could see some of the city is actually quite clean and pretty. The landscape is very interesting. The city is built in a valley. Many homes are stacked up high in jagged mountain lines... homes are shanties built on top of one another and the place just feels hot hot hot.
Guatemala City, Guatemala jen_83... garage did not lead to the main shopping area, we turned around and got our first quetzals. Being brave and daring adventurers, we avoided the easy taxi ride for 50 quetzals and instead jumped on the local bus for 1 quetzal, thereby saving us 48 of the very cool looking ones. It was quite a nice bus really, and we were entertained by the sellers who jumped on the bus with pens, WOW! gum, and strange light bulb key-chains. We proceeded through the ...
