San Antonio Itzapa, Guatemala

... candles and smoking the huge cigars favored by Maximon. He is the patron saint of prostitutes and, evidently also cross-dressers and drunks! They got started early dancing, drinking and lighting firecrackers...in fact those started at midnight the 27th outside our hotel rooms.

The cave, The last(?) ruin, The cosy city

... have any interest in looking at said people.

San Ignacio was pretty dead when I was there, it was a say story to walk around there in the evening. But I did see a tarantula spider walking on the street. I couldn´t get a good picture that showed how big it was so I figured that the best way to do it is probably to take it in my hand for a photo session (I didn´t).
I went on a cool caving hike. Armed with head lights a small group with a guide hiked to a cave and started to ...

(Speaking Spanish is a completely different story and much more difficult!).

Antigua Exotic and San Felipe
Thursday afternoon last week, Maribel - my teacher - and another teacher, took some of us to Antigua Exotic in San Felipe - a suburb - which is the home to many exotic animals. We took the chicken bus for a few minutes and just as we started walking it ...

Hot Dogs Roasting On An Open Volcano

... for the stickies, or some of the stray dogs would be enjoying a nice grilled Sue/Ted sammy right about now. Susan´s legs were literally burning (they remained red for a few hours!), and we were absolutely terrified the first few minutes we were up there. Watching lava flow around and underneath you is one of the coolest things ever, but not having anything to hold on to and no semblance of security or safety precautions is really scary!
<br ...

The first Antiguan observations

... surrounded by several mountains of which several are volcanos. In the mornings the sky seems always to be clear and cloudless, whereas some clouds come down from the mountains during the afternoon. It is pleasantly warm with approximately 25 degrees, although it is a lot warmer under the burning sun. So I do as the locals, walk and stay in the shade most of the time.

Another interesting ...

Earthquake, wind: tomato, tamato

... at all times, and I had not taken his advice. I had no idea what to do. I thought that we should get outside, but Karyma had the keys to our apartment because she was picking us up so early today. After about 10 minutes the earthquake ended and it was pretty frightening. I was thinking that it was pretty standard here to have an earthquake like that but apparently not! http://news.sky.com ...

... which was a bit disconcerting. Even more so for a few unlucky people whose shoes completely melted and you could see their feet through the toes. As we waited to go back there was a line of sullen people with cuts and bruises and melted footwear trudging past, obviously not seeing the funny side of how utterly unsafe being there was.

U2: No Line on the Horizon

Yeah, I'm taking time to drop a line about U2's new one. Lame? Perhaps, but I was so surprised that I just had to write something. Last night I took some time and listened to No Line on the Horizon. No, it's not officially released yet, but I got word that some copies were accidentally sold early by some store in Australia. Of course, within minutes, the album was availabe on torrents. I'd been following its progress for quite some time. Being a rabid U2 fan, this was really the only ...

Guatemala: West

... ole Irish, can always count on them. At midnight there was a spectacular display of fireworks all over the town, not an organized single event but hundreds of private displays all over the place. We had the best view on our roof terrace. We spent Christmas Day in bikinis sun bathing on said roof. With Cava. And went of to Reilly's again, the only open bar in town. Then Katy got really sick. She was down for 4-5 days with gastrointestinal stuff. Really horrid ...

ANTIGUA REDUX

... you if someone denounced you as a Communist. Your options weren’t much better if you happened to have the same name as a prominent dissident. Fortunately most indigenous Guatemalans have kept their original names. Our house above the hot springs just wasn’t the same after they found a body thrown down an adjacent ravine. Things should have gotten better with a democratic resolution to ...
