Comfortable & well equipped.

Stafford Gables is well situated in easy walking distance of the centre of town. It is an old building, but has some character, plenty of hot water, reasonable beds & very well equipped kitchen. The manager is very helpful. We had a small double room on the top floor, which had a good view. The wifi didn't work up there, but was fine downstairs. We enjoyed our stay.

Dated and grubby!

This massive hostel felt (& smelt) more like an old people's home than a hostel. It is in much need of renovation and everywhere is really dated!

It could do with been cleaned more regularly- the kitchen for example is cleaned only at 3pm so there is dinner, breakfast and lunch before its cleaned and it gets very grubby. There were never any clean tea towels to use so washing up gets piled up quick. The kitchen is large but hardly any of the appliances work (1/3 toasters, 5/12 hobs worked).

The free wifi is absolutely useless. You have to be at the hotel reception desk to have any chance of getting it to work and even then, 9 times out of 10, it won't work.

The worst thing about this hostel is the bedding. They give you a pillowcase and a top sheet when you check in, the bottom sheet and duvet cover were already on the beds. Of course I assumed these were clean on but, no. Several times I saw the cleaner come tidy people's beds after they'd checked out but only smoothed the same sheet down and rolled up the duvet cover with the used sheet cover still on! Gross!!!

Don't stay here, its not good!

This is a former hospital but it is hard to believe. All the sleeping rooms are on the second floor so this not for everyone...just about everything is stairways except the kitchen and the internet room. But I really enjoyed it here as the rooms were huge and full of light and air..mine had a balcony even. The back yard is a quiet retreat as well. The staff was super helpful and took edtra care with managing my bookings as I had many changes.

Really nice clean hostel, its rambling and all over the place but I like that, you have to give it a good explore! Again a little large to be social but still really nice.

A great YHA hostel, I was staying in a cosy 3 bed dorm in the top of the house. All rooms and bathrooms were well kept and clean. The kitchen was large and fairly well stocked with utensils etc. The dining area and lounge were very comfortable to chill in and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
The only downside for me was the location, I didn't mind the walk out of out town but not ideal to do by yourself late at night. Too many dark places for my liking!
I can't otherwise fault the hostel and they can't help their location, just something to be aware of if you are travelling alone. Please don't let it stop you staying here tho!

Perhaps punning is the lowest form of wit. After a long bus ride, I was in Dunedin by early afternoon. Wandering in town I spotted ads for a festival, coinciding with the start of term for Otago university, which explained why so many backpacker hostels had said no (on the BBH site you can't see which have rooms available, just submit a request to …

We arrived in Dunedin still wishing we had stayed a night in the Steam Punk capital instead. The mist had descended as we approached the city, so we saw very little scenery as we drove into town. Having checked into our hostel - a huge old house with lovely wood panelling on the ground floor & some quite grand spaces on the first floor ; but we …

We left Queenstown bound for Dunedin but made a stop in Alexandra on the way. This was to stop and see Christine, another of my Dads cousins, Norene's sister. We stopped for a while at her house and had a cup of tea and one of her amazing homemade cakes! Just as we were leaving, Christine's husband Phil came home so we got to meet him too which was …
