Greymouth

In Greymouth we stayed at the Duke's backpackers. It is run by a couple of Israelis - Shosh and Dori - and we celebrated the first candle of Hanuca. Ori made the sufganiyot and I got to babysit their little ones - Itai and Yotam :)

I'm Alive...

Left Christchurch and went on to Arthurs Pass with Franz. This was my first real experience driving and you'll be surprised to know that it's not that difficult. At first I thought that it would be like forgetting to ride a bike which we all know is impossible , but really it was easy. Maybe because I'm left handed. You would think that there would be some logical reason in the history books for why certain British and other countries drive on the left and the rest don't. Has anybody asked th...

the top of the west coast

We travelled across the mountains to Westport in one day (lots of driving!!) and found a hostel to stay in for a night,as the town of Westport is really uninteresting. Thought we'd save a bit of money and camp in the garden instead of stay in the hostel itself, but unfortunately the Kiwi Experience bus unloaded it's intensely annoying passengers at the hostel and they kept us awake for ages. Next day we carried on down the coast and saw the 'pancake rocks' at Punakaiki then to Greymouth where...

Touring the South Island (Finally!) Part 1

Stacie, a friend of mine from college took off on her spring break and came to visit me here in New Zealand. She's been planning the trip for months now and I impatiently awaited her arrival. Finally I was going to get to leave the city! Our plans were to rent a car and travel the South Island--and that we did. I will be writing a series of blogs to detail the trip. I picked Stacie up at the Christchurch airport at 8:00 in the morning Friday, March 1. I was so excited to see someone from home...

Dreary, cold and raining in Greymouth

What a boring town! After the thrilling time in Franz Josef, we took the last bus ride to Greymouth for one night before taking the Tranz Alpine train to Christchurch. It was cold, gray and raining and there wasn’t much to do in this town.

We spent the evening by the fireplace in the hostel and talked to a couple of interesting travelers. Two guys from NY had bought a van and it was packed with their snowboards and surf boards. They were traveling for one year surfing and snowboa...

Greymouth

I arrived to Greymouth to the Duke backpackers just to discover that one of my friend from Israel was there without me knowing that. We always say that Israel is a small place but NZ, this is just amazing.

... the small town of Motueka to visit my father's uncle via the town of Nelson. Now, apparently, the one ring used in Lord of the Rings wasn't actually forged from the fires of Mount Doom but was made by some guy there. The South Island is apparently the place to be for Lord of the Rings.

After having a nice family reunion I then got ready for what would be the coldest night's sleep of my entire life. Punakaiki

... to do it with better weather. Near Murchinson we stopped at NZ`s longest swingbridge, which, besides long, turned out to be a tourist trap.

South Island Part 9: Greymouth & Christchurch

... I also booked on to the TranzAlpine for the next day. This train takes you across the country to Greymouth (near Barrytown for those that remember) through Arthurs Pass, and it supposed to be one of the best train rides in the world. The next day I was up before any of the rest of the bus crew. I was waiting for the free bus to the station. I saw Kerry briefly outside and we said our goodbyes again. At the station, the train was 8 carriages ...

Pancake rocks

... say that the waterproof trousers are becoming my favourite item of clothing - it's a great look whatever the weather!! At least the weather means you see some impressive sea action with the waves crashing against the rocks. This walk took us right out to a small penninsula with huge rock formations - which was mental with the waves all around you. At one point I saw this big creature coming up the rocks ahead of us and I have to admit (the shame ...

Grey Glaciers

... thing about glaciers is that you can't capture their enormity in a photograph, particularly on a grey day. We hiked in beyond the safety boundary (as did everyone else and) after crossing a rocky stream, got close enough to tell that they weren't lying: it is sluffing off front layers. The ice is a deep blue, but again, you can't really tell that in a picture. Then, we drove north to Franz Josef Glacier but the rain was even more intense. We opted for ...
