And if you're going to make this stuff up you might as well pick a celebrity people have heard of. Still, he was a nice chap and said next time I was in San Francisco I could stay in his mansion. That would be interesting.
The day after that I went to join up with my Chile and Bolivia tour group; The Atacama Crossing. It's the driest desert in the ...
... stop and just a couple of hundred metres away itīs completely silent if thereīs no wind. Mountains and glaciars have always been my favourite landscape to explore and so on, but this is my first desert and I have to say itīs surprisingly good.
So anyway, ŋwhat did I get up to? Day 1 I went to my hostel but there was no bed free for my to dump my bag next to until people checked out a couple of hours later, so I went to sconce the town and assess some of the tour ...
... The "hostel" was so basic you could just feel the wind blowing through the windows...
Waking up at 6am freezing cold to watch the sun rise was pretty cool and very cold...
So day 2 we drove into the desert proper it was really really dusty and very hot during the day. The desert is called Dali's Desert as he was known to paint it...
We also visited a number of lagoons and saw flamingos ...

PS - no shower facilities during the trip =( My hair was CRAZY tangled from the wind, salt, dirt and dry air. Then my hotel was fully booked that night, so I wasn't allowed back into a room for a shower. Did the best I could in the bathroom (bird bath), but still couldnīt wash my hair =(

... in the world) seeing alpacas, various birds and even an active volcano! The desert really is special - virtually no rainfall at all, clouds are rare (we saw none in 5 days) and nothing green (only rocks and sand).
On our last night we visited a local observatory and had a fascinating and hugely funny evening with a mad Frenchman discussing the stars and our solar system. There were several telescopes set up so we got to see stars ...
... streets admiring the stalls where local merchandise was being sold. When we returned to our jeep, Daniel had prepared us a lunch of chicken, pasta and vegetables which we ate at a table made of salt sat on chairs made of salt! Our last stop of the trip was at the train cemetery which was like playground designed for adults! We had lots of fun climbing in and on the train wrecks and writing in chalk on the old trains - a great end to a great trip!
