Running out of Old Towns

· Krakow, Poland · Prague time +0hrs · Days to get to Prague - 2 When you are everywhere, you are nowhere. When you are somewhere, you are everywhere - Rumi Krakow - Poland's past Remember how, in the last entry, I said Poland was used a battleground during World War II and how most of its cities were badly damaged as a result? Well, scratch that where Krakow is concerned. It's probably Poland's most cosmopolitan, and definitely its best preserved, city having miraculously survived WWII unsca...

Krakow

When I first got off the plane, the first thing that I noticed was that it was alot colder. This was confirmed by the Polish girl. And raining, but a much colder rain than in Britian. Maybe it was the absence of the ocean, but everything seemed more serious and gloomy. There were ultra modern buses to take up about 100 yds to the main building, as there was no skywalks, obiously a North American luxury (I didnt mind at all though!) Once in, I bought a Euro-north american adaptor for my camer...

The Salt Caverns of Deep Earth

In the morning, I awoke earlier than usual. The funny things about hostels is that waking up is like a snowball reaction. The most sensitive sleeper wakes up, then the next, until finally there are 10 people in your room milling about and you are forced to get up, with zippers being zipped, and sheets being pulled off inorder to be checked out. My newly acquired Polish friends (from Warsaw) where also up, having enjoyed some Zywiec (pronounced ju-vie-etta) the night before. Nonetheless, we w...

The Horrors of Our Past

Although many things have been said over the years about this place, I find that their is almost nothing that can be said to descibe this place. No personal photos will ever be able to give enough insight into this place, no pictures on the internet. The feeling of standing within both camps can never be fully experienced through photos, for there is a vibe in both Auschwitz I and Auschwitz-Birkenau II that will never be known until you have stood upon the unloading dock, the quarters, and f...

Krakow - Birth place of Pope JPII

The weather in Poland was absolutely beautiful! We didn't have a TV to watch so I don't know what the temperature was exactly but there were blues skies and short sleeves to be worn! Well actually the very first morning we arrived it was about 6.30am and it was quite fresh to say the least but after that for the next 5 days it was beautiful. Again we didn't book a hostel prior to arriving, deciding to just try our luck with a few we had picked out from the brochures we had picked up along the...

I made it... and boy are my arms tired.

I left you with a note about me being at the Krakow airport and grabbing my backpack therefor I will branch from there. The Krakow airport, being much smaller in comparison to Paris, was a piece of cake to navigate around but I still had one small problem-I didn't have a place to sleep for the night. Don't worry family, I know you're flipping out. A lady at the information desk in the airport was very helpful and gave me several brochures, maps and various other train and bus routes so that I...

I 'Krak' Myself Up..

Greetings from Krakow. We'd heard and read good things about Krakow on our trip south through the Baltic states so much so that we were expecting big things. Add to that the football world cup would finally be kicking off on the Friday night which would give us a chance to mingle with the locals and knock a few back whilst watching Poland play. Were we setting ourselves up for some major disappointment ? Read on.. So we decide to catch our first train of the trip and missed the train we were ...

Krakow, and then on to the Ukraine

I am off to catch the overnight train to Krakow. This is the train which in the past has had a history of being held up. Will report back right after my arrival at the Dizzy Daisy Summer Hostel in the morning. Arrived without incident, the train for some unknown reason a couple hours out of Prague was stopped on a side track. I was riding in the same wagon berth with Julianne, an Irish girl. Hey, my first Irish girl, and I didn't even get her drunk to find out if Irish girls were really as e...

More than it is cracked up to be

... at Auschwitz, so too were their numerous possessions. As their bodies were burned, many of their personal effects were gathered up and stored away for some future application. Today thousands of shoes, eyeglasses, suitcases and articles of clothing that the Jews and many other unfortunate souls brought with them to the camp sit in enormous displays and bear testimony to the magnitude of the horror of Auschwitz. One room, for example, contained nearly 6 tons of human hair that had been ...
