Darwin YHA

Darwin is horrible - avoid it if possible. Except for the sunset but even then the horrible Darwin mossies come out and feast on your ankles while you attempt to take a good photo or two. Personally I don’t think it’s worth it. And the airport is even worse. Especially when the Scottish guy you meet gets chased through it by immigration as he’s overstayed his visa by a year and you almost can’t check into the flight as you forget you had booked a flight out of Ind...

On Wednesday the 15th I woke up at 11 o'clock and went straight to the reception to see what had happened to my bed. They told me that there had been a mix up and so they reimbursed me for one night. So I have finally set off backpacking again. I managed to squeeze all I needed (I hope!) into my backpack and flew up to Darwin in the Northern Territory. Sat Sep 18th - Day 145 We spent the morning at the Labuan War cemetry, paying our respects to the nearly 4000 Commonwealth Servicemen who lost their lives in Borneo during the Second World War. I have had a wicked time in Darwin - the first urban place in Oz that I like. Admitedly I had a sprained ankle in Sydney and Melbourne, resulting from a fall down stairs on a double decker train on Anzac day (a public holiday where it is practically illegal not to get wasted). I booked my flight taxi for six fifteen, but the aussie woman heard six fifty, so the taxi was a bit late. flight to Darwin was uneventful, and I tried and failed to talk to an american couple sitting next to me.
