Get me out of here......

Darwin is horrible - avoid it if possible. Except for the sunset but even then the horrible Darwin mossies come out and feast on your ankles while you attempt to take a good photo or two. Personally I don’t think it’s worth it. And the airport is even worse. Especially when the Scottish guy you meet gets chased through it by immigration as he’s overstayed his visa by a year and you almost can’t check into the flight as you forget you had booked a flight out of Ind...

Darwin

On Wednesday the 15th I woke up at 11 o'clock and went straight to the reception to see what had happened to my bed. They told me that there had been a mix up and so they reimbursed me for one night. I had a full Irish breakfast next door for breakfast. After that I walked around Darwin, which was hot, hot, hot. I was trying to rent a 4X4 car for Manca and I to drive to Kakadu National Park (one of the biggest in oz). But there were no free cars for the day we wanted it. In the afternoon I m...

Heading North to the sun!

So I have finally set off backpacking again. I managed to squeeze all I needed (I hope!) into my backpack and flew up to Darwin in the Northern Territory. Having left a cool 20 degrees melbourne stepping out into the slightly humid 34 degree Darwin heat was great. I quickly met people at my hostel and after a good nights sleep set off to discover what Darwin has to offer with them. We wandered down the esplanade, to the lagoon (a mini manmade beach where you can swim and be safe from crocs), ...

Labuan - Brunei - Darwin

Sat Sep 18th - Day 145 We spent the morning at the Labuan War cemetry, paying our respects to the nearly 4000 Commonwealth Servicemen who lost their lives in Borneo during the Second World War. Mostly Australian nad British the row upon neat row of headstones also contains those men who died on the Sandakan to Ranu death marches. The vast manuicured lawns have beds of beautiful flowers and shrubs between the rows of white headstones. All the headstones house a small bronze plate bearing an ep...

Darwin to Bangkok

I have had a wicked time in Darwin - the first urban place in Oz that I like. Admitedly I had a sprained ankle in Sydney and Melbourne, resulting from a fall down stairs on a double decker train on Anzac day (a public holiday where it is practically illegal not to get wasted). Therefore it was dfficult to roam about happily around these cities.... and I had such high expectations. When you come from London, Australian cities are quite similar and therefore uninspiring unlesss you're spending...

Good Lord, it's hot!

We're in Darwin now! I reckon this last week has probably been the hottest in my life!! I really need to start doing this more often so I don't have to struggle to remember evreything, but never mind - I will do my best... So, after Coral Bay we travelled to Exmouth. This is roughly a two hour trip, but of course, due to the general greatness of Greyhound buses, the only time we could do this trip was at 3.30am. This meant no sleep, except snatched and uncomfy dozing, and when we finally made...

Days 224-227

On Friday night Naomi, Sarah and Alex arrived in town so we met up at the bar next to the YHA hostel I'm staying in. Synna was still here and we were joined by the Australian outback-dwelling James. He has qualified as a doctor and is seeing Darwin before starting work in Katherine, the tiny town we stopped at on the Ghan. Saturday was our trip to Litchfield National Park. The hostel receptionist woke me up at 7am after realising I had over-slept so that was kind of her! The girls were alread...

Bloody Backpackers!

Where have i been this time? Having escaped Cairns with minimal fuss, Quantas doing everything they said and the plane stayed in one piece for once too! Got to The Alice, a bit of a scummy hole really. We set off nice and early at 0500 to get to the Rock. We visited Kata Tjuta and Uluru, both red rock formations but both formed in very different ways. Pretty. camping under the stars was great but once again very cold! i brought the wrong sleeping bag, i can just picture my nice Rab down bag s...

Arrival Darwin

I booked my flight taxi for six fifteen, but the aussie woman heard six fifty, so the taxi was a bit late. flight to Darwin was uneventful, and I tried and failed to talk to an american couple sitting next to me. The air shuttle brought me to YHA Darwin, though again, nobody wanted to talk. felt very lonely, so spent the day planning and booking my itinerary. spent 2000 dollars on everything for the next 2weeks through Margaret in the YHA travel darwin - very helpful lady. Saw an amazing suns...

Road trippin, Partyin & Sun worshippin!

In Mataranka we swam in some beautiful ‘natural springs’ - they were lovely and warm and so clear! At the second swimming area some people told us that freshwater crocodiles lived up stream at the hotel, this didn’t really faze us until we were swimming past some suspect looking reeds and we all felt something brush past us! Well, the four of us had never swum so fast as that moment to get out of the water, we never did find out ...

THE OUTBACK

... stopped off at the Alice Springs sign and took our group photo. That evening we went to Overlander's Steakhouse for a Drover's Blowout dinner which consisted of crocodile, camel, emu and kangaroo. Everyone climed this ladder in the restaurant and signed the ceiling. Then we all danced around with wobble boards and sang the Gum Tree song. Then we went out to Bojangle's Bar, had a few drinks and went home.
30th May - Went into Alice Springs town to do some internet and had ...
