Vietnam's capital

Hanoi, capital of Vietnam, was the similar hussle and bussle of motorbikes and general activity we had experienced in Ho Chi Minh city. Arriving at 'Darling Guesthouse' in the early hours, we were presented with a lovely bowl of noodle soup for breakfast; our staple diet throughout this country. Meeting with our two other friends, Tim and Chelsey, we took a moto over to see Ho Chi Minh's mausoleum (corpse). We joined the mile-long queue and were treated like celebreties walking past it, lots ...

Lost

I liked Hanoi as soon as I arrived, even if I was completely lost and had absolutely no idea where to start looking for accomodation. The bus dropped me miles out of town and because I'd done no research, not even looking at a map of the city, I didn't know where to go. There weren't many tourists on the bus, but I met a Japanese guy, Tomoyasu, who was heading into the city centre. So I tagged along with him, even though I didn't know whether this would lead me to accomodation. It was just lu...

Back in Hanoi I risked my life on a motorbike. The roads are insane. I've never seen so many bikes...usually overloaded with people, boxes, huge mirrors, dead pigs, live ducks strapped to the sides by their feet, or even a boat! Gunta, Craig, Steve and I decided to go to the Museum of Ethnology. It's a little way out of town, so we thought it'd be fun to get a bike there. It was fun, but also incredibly dangerous. We got 2 bikes, so including our driver, there were 3 to a bike. We had to shar...

Jet Lag in the bag!

... A woman from Spain ended up riding with us after being told she would have to pay 30 dollars in a taxi to go to the same area where we were staying. She worked for a Spanish airline and was well traveled and was just finishing up a month long tour of southeast Asia. If we ever go to South America or Spain we will have some insider info!

We arrived at the hotel and got an awesome room with a balcony overlooking the street. The bathroom was surprisingly well stocked with a comb, cotton swabs ...

We are now in Hanoi

... was able to say hi to my dad again to which my sister-in-law told me he knew it was me. We hope that the kids will say be able to say hi to him, but there has not been the opportunity so far. He is on 100% oxygen and someone from the family must now stay with him every night as he becomes agitated - apparently last night we kept taking his mask off. I will hope that as long as he is not suffering he will make it until I get home.

Hanoi and Halong Bay

... After the tomb we went to Dong Xuan Market. It was packed full of stalls selling eveything you can imagine and there was even a fountain in the middle with baby turtles in it! After spending some time here we decided it was time for cake and found a cafe in which we could eat and play some cards. Unfortunately the cake wasn't as good as we'd expected, which was really disappointing as I hate eating bad cake. We then headed to the water puppet theatre to watch a ...

Salut, Nos deux familles nous ont quitté ce matin.Ils s'envolent sur Taipei, ensuite Vancouver et Mtl....ca fait bizarre de se retrouver seul, moi et Annie. On a été en groupe si longtemps. Yes, I've got no bananas ......

... earlier, we got chatting to one of the guys in the hotel and I asked him why the people across the road were burning things on the side of the road. He said it was to do with their religion, that by burning whatever it was they were burning, they were ensuring prosperity for their families. I asked him whether he was a Buddhist and he said 'No, I'm free', which I thought was a very interesting answer. Tomorrow we head for Haphong, here's hoping for good weather. Laters

So So Grateful

... without chancing some difficult challenges. Again, for some reason, I hate to take the easy way????? Hmmm. Maybe it will be the only easy thing in Laos. Janice is coming on the 22? to Thailand so I will have to get back over there some time around then. She is very flexible and understands this place so she will not be expecting me to be at the airport to meet her. If I am - great, if not, I will find her in some dive shop ...
