Sucre

Arriving an Sucre, and I finally felt as though I was in something that resembled a ´real´ city.. more than La Paz, and definitely more than anywhere else in Bolivia I had been. And whilst it was a fairly laid-back city at best, it had a supermarket (i`m still not sure that there was one in La Paz even...), and again felt very European. By the time i reached Sucre, i really wasn´t in the mood for being a good traveller/tourist. I was feeling incredibly lazy, and actually excited that i was ag...

Sucre - La Cuidad Blanca

I got off the bus and headed for a hostel, which turned out to be shut. I hunted up and down the street, accosted a Gringo in the street and got myself a bed. After a snooze I got up and had two new friends; Simone from Austria who had spent two years in New Zealand so spoke excellent English, and Kalsang from Switzerland, born in Bhutan of Tibetan parents who also spoke good English. The three of us, under Simone´s leadership, headed off to explore the city. First stop was the Ethnic Textile...

Sucre

The bus ride to Sucre was quite easy and only about 3 hours or so. Compared to the other journeys we have had here, it was quite easy...it is amazing how much difference a paved road makes. On our first day we made our way to our hostel which was nice enough excpet that it only has one hot shower for the entire place and two bathrooms. The doors do not close properly and you are unable to lock them, but there is an understanding that if the door is closed, you just don´t go in. Our room is ni...

Day 8- Potosi to Sucre

My first impressions of Sucre was that it was clean, had more money than other areas of Bolivia that we had so far visited, which was apparent from the large style haciendas built on the outskirts of the city, some with swimming pools and that it would be a really great place to kick back and just mooch for a few days, it just had a really nice chilled welcoming feel about it. The other bonus of being in Sucre was that it was the lowest altitude that we had been at since La Paz and some of th...

seven Spanish angels at the alter of the sun

There were seven Spanish Angels, At the alter of the Sun. They were prayin' for the lovers, In the valley of the gun. When the battle stopped, And the smoke cleared. There was thunder from the throne. And seven Spanish angels, Took another angel home. There are so few consistently beautiful cities. Paris. Florence. Maybe a few more. But most cities have their inconsistent parts. The sad parts. And travelling through SA, we´ve seen too much of the sadder sides of cities. Until Sucre, some pics...

Sucre is the true capital of Bolivia and is considered the most refined and beautiful city in Bolivia. The city is the market centre for a mountainous rural hinterland inhabited by Quecha speaking indigenous communities. These communities are particularly renowned for their beautiful weavings, considered amongst the finest in all the Andes. We visited the Museo de Arte Indigena which is housed in an elegant colonial building. The museum is a not for profit organisation which has been working ...

Potosi to Sucre

The bus ride from Potosi to Sucre was only about 3 hours, so not bad at all and I think I slept for most of it! Our hostel is nice, well the room is really nice, but the one shower between the whole of the hostel is not that great! It has no lock and the door doesn`t even close properly, so you have to grab a chair from outside and wedge it against the door so that no one walks in as you are showering or going to the toilet! Sucre is a very nice town and a lot more westernised than any of the...

Fun on the bus

11 hour journey on the bus overnight to get here and what a journey it was. ambers seat collapsed ón the girl behind us, after about 20 minutes of driving the lights went off so it was very very dark the whole way (very few streetlights in the mountains), the rain poured down and we found ourselves in the middle of a thunderstorm - the bus lit up a couple of times followed half a second later by thunder so loud it woke everyone on the bus. the road was very bumpy all the way, there was no bar...

Sucre- Judicial capital of Bolivia

We left Potosi on Saturday for Sucre, which we heard was a nice city from Anthony and Siobhan. We were lucking forward to this as we needed some time to relax and recharge the batteries again. We decided to stay in a hostel that was number 1 in trip advisor so we were expecting good things but unfortunately it did not live up to them!! It was ok but the staff were rude and no way helpful and all the cupboards in the kitchen were locked up which is a bit stupid really as you have to go to rece...

A city under siege!

... us.. We won.. well, we could sing in English for goodness sake! Back to La Paz tomorrow and there for 2 days before leaving for Brazil. Am gonna go to the local prison whist there which sounds very strange indeed. People get sentenced and then move in to this prison.. Along with their familes. They can all come and go when they want(inc the prisoner), pay rent on their 'cell' AND is where you can get the best cocaine in Bolivia!! It sounds completely mad! Ciao for now am
