freindly, great pool and garden area. Even after check out time you can still hang out and use all the facilites. Only down side is the train that runs past, not the hostel's fault but super annoying all the same, If possible try and get a room at the back under the hostel as opposed to one outside, much quieter, not so much nosie from the train. Recommend this above the Lonely Planet recommended hostels.

Needs a lot of love, looking a little shabby round the edges but has the basics, internet, TV, just about enough cuttlery and friendly staff.

We stayed in double room with fan and shared bath. Our room was spartan and clean but lacking charm. The shared areas are attractive with reggae constantly playing on the various sound systems.. Many places to hang out. The garden with pool is well maintained and inviting. Quick (4 hour) laundry service. Showers are warm (not hot). Friendly travel advice and service on site. Nice bank of computers and wifi to keep in touch. Helpful staff...We didn't use the shared kitchen but it appeared to be quite crowded at times.

The adjoining restaurant served decent food in the loud bar area. We found great budget food at the soda (open till 5:00pm) nearby around the corner and local bus stops block and a half away. Pizza Hut and a decent Sushi place is 3 or 4 blocks away.

Good for a brief stay. A bit hectic for longer stays.

Up early to take a day trip out of San Jose up to Volcan Poas which is supposedly the most visited national park in Costa Rica. It takes about two hours or so to get there from San Jose by local bus via a nearby town called Alajuela and passing through some quite stunning scenery in a region called Western Meseta Central. The active volcano crater …

Back in San Jose with the plan to use here as a base go to the Volcano Poas National Park and whitewater rafting in Turrialba over the next couple of days before I head north to Costa Rica´s caribbean coast. Had some rather bad news regarding later on in my trip - I´ve had it in the back of my mind for a while that I need to book my Inca Trail Trek …
